Thoughts on the 2022 Hellraiser reboot?

Goran Višnjić landed a role in the new Hellraiser, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s a remake of that 1987 British horror flick that everyone considers an absolute legend in its genre.

The original movie was based on the novella Hellheart by Clive Barker. American actress and model Jamie Clayton is taking the lead in this remake, though we still don't know who else is joining the cast—so we're still waiting to see where Goran Višnjić fits in.

The rest of the lineup includes Odessa A'zion, Brandon Flynn, Drew Starkey, Adam Faison, Aofe Hinds, Hiam Abbass, Selina Lo, and more.

It's official: Clive Barker is on board as a producer, and David Bruckner is stepping in to direct. The project is actually already in post-production, and it looks like it'll hit Hulu sometime in 2022.

Barker told some US media outlets that while they want to pay homage to the 80s classic, they're definitely going to tweak the story to fit a modern setting and vibe.

it feels like they might be pushing for one of those teen-oriented movies, kind of like what happened back in 2010, I guess.

The film's story would differ from the original film, as Lussier and farmer did not Want to retell The original Story out of respect for Clive Barker's work. The film was to instead focus on the world and function of the puzzle box. Lussier and farmer dismissed The notion of a teen-oriented Hellraiser film, stating "if we do Hellraiser, it's rated R; if they want to do PG-13 then they have to get rid of us". In 2011, farmer confirmed that both He and Lussier were no longer attached to the project.

The first two sequels were alright, I guess you could even argue the third one is passable, but the rest? Absolute trash.

Now, before the usual crowd starts typing out furious rants about the feminization of pop culture or some "woke" agenda—we should probably look at the source material. In Clive Barker's original novella, "Hellbound Heart," the cenobites are described as beings of indeterminate gender. And their leader—the one they call "Pinhead" in the book—is described, and I quote, as having a voice excite girl.

The cenobites are essentially perverse demons, and let's face it, demons don't really care about gender binaries. So, casting a trans person actually fits the lore perfectly.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Hollywood politics.
It feels like we’re heading toward a point where you'll probably have to disclose if you're trans, bi, non-binary, or whatever other category exists on the list just to fill out a form. But, I guess, nevermind...
Speaking of the cenobite, I don't actually recall them being asexual or perverse—it's been a while. I should probably rewatch the movies to be sure.

Speaking of those cenobites—honestly, I don't recall them being portrayed as sexless or perverse at all. It’s funny how memory works like that. I really ought to sit down and rewatch the films just to be sure.

In that novel, the Cenobites aren't quite the same as they are in the movie—they're different—and the lead Cenobite, the one with all those pins in his head, apparently "has a voice excite girl."
Honestly, Pinhead could play a woman without breaking a sweat. If they were actually transgender—which, let's be real, would just add another layer of supernatural weirdness to the whole vibe—it would be perfect.

Haven't even bothered touching the sequels.

I have watched the first film along with a few of its sequels. To be honest, I didn't really perceive them as horror films so much as some sort of instructional manual for butchers and pathologists. I suppose I just didn't care for it much.

The first two Hellraiser movies are absolute horror masterpieces.

Everything else? Total garbage.

The first one’s a masterpiece, and the second is a straight-up sequel that actually works. As for the rest? Total blur. I can barely remember a single scene from them.

The fallout over having a female Pinhead is pretty hilarious to watch. Just the usual predictable whining about the modern "progressive" agenda in Hollywood. Honestly, it’s just a bunch of people who think they're fans because they saw a poster once. 🤣

In the second installment, Pinhead feels surprisingly soft—almost like he’s turning into the good guy. He’s nothing compared to that absolutely unhinged doctor, and those disgusting cenobits? They're just a bunch of teenagers who ended up committing suicide in their real lives...

Honestly, I couldn't care less who plays Pinhead; the character is bizarre and grotesque enough as it is. You could cast Al Bundy for all I care. 😁

But attempting to remake such a masterpiece in this era of aggressive political correctness... meh. Perhaps it would be tolerable if it were handled by the Russians or some European studio instead, as that would at least guarantee a certain level of authenticity regarding the source material. 👎

The first one was actually solid. Everything after that... just nonsense.

You aren't alone in that... the movie was just hyped up way too much for its era, so people were likely too intimidated to admit it wasn't great. If I gave Freddy Krueger a 10/10... then Hellraiser is maybe a 3/10.

Honestly, I doubt a remake could ever actually top the original 😛

Facts. Honestly, the absolute worst horror movie ever made was when Americans tried to film Three Homes and UN a little beba tres bien.

It's a film that you could probably comfortably consider part of the Hellraiser franchise. 👍

The first movie wasn't exactly a masterpiece by any stretch, but those brief glimpses of the Cenobites and those quick flashes of their ideology? That gave the whole thing such a cool edge. Plus, the raw directing style really worked with the script. Some of that vibe stuck around for the sequel, but most of it just faded away.

I’d be shocked if this remake doesn't totally miss the mark. It’ll probably end up feeling super generic and overproduced, losing everything that actually made the original worth watching in the first place.
