Hey everyone. My kid is running this setup:
Intel Core i5 9400 up to 4.1GHz,
8GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD,
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6GB, no ODD,
and an AOC 144 Hz monitor: 24G2U, 24", IPS, FHD 1920x1080px, 1ms, 144 Hz, DP, 2x HDMI, AMD FreeSync, 4x USB3.0
He’s mostly playing Fortnite—but now he wants a 240 Hz monitor to "boost" his gaming performance...
Any advice? Does it even make sense to grab a high refresh rate monitor (GeForce compatible) with his current card—or should we be looking at other upgrades to actually improve gameplay?
I'd appreciate any help before he blows through his entire savings on something useless!

It’s total overkill. At a certain point, refresh rates become more of a marketing gimmick than anything you can actually perceive while playing.
If we were talking about someone doing this professionally—like playing for an esports org or serious streaming—I might justify the investment. But in this case, I’d draw a line right here: this is just throwing money down the drain.

Also, if the kid is showing any of these signs:
1) Constant screaming and/or trying to physically lash out at his hardware
2) Blaming things outside his control (like ping, lag, aimbots, or cheats) for his own failures
3) Mocking people in real life using those signature Fortnite dances

...I’d go even further and say he absolutely does not need a better monitor; he isn't going to magically get better just because of it. 😬

Thanks for the tip, Adam Moore3. Luckily, he’s not showing any of those symptoms—not even close. He’s got strict daily limits on screen time, plus he’ll still drop everything just to go hit some hoops outside with his buddies... Honestly, I think he just fell for some YouTuber's hype or something, so we'll just have to wait it out.

I’m skeptical that this specific hardware 2 is powerful enough to push those kinds of frame rates on the latest version of Fortnite. If we were talking about making the jump from a 60Hz display to a 144Hz one, I might see the logic, but since he’s already running a 144Hz monitor—which features AMD FreeSync, and knowing NVIDIA supports it under the "G-Sync Compatible" label—this whole argument falls flat.

Besides, let's be real: he’d have to be in that tiny 0.3% of global gamers who could actually perceive the difference between 144Hz and 240Hz.

Is there any way to actually dial back the motion blur even further when switching from 144Hz up to 240Hz?
