Hey everyone, I could really use some help here... So, I burned five movies onto a single 4.7 GB DVD. They're all in .avi format. Here's the catch: three of them play perfectly fine, but the other two just won't work. Look, I'm no tech expert, so I was hoping someone here could talk me through this. I know there are a million variables—codecs, resolution, whatever—but I've put together five screenshots to try and make sense of it. I just right-clicked each file, went to properties, and checked the details. Hopefully, that gives you enough to work with. First, here are the shots for the three films that actually play:

And these are the two troublemakers that won't play:

I'm not sure if these screenshots provide enough info, but it's what I've got. If it would be easier to figure out why these two are failing while the others work, let me know if I should download some specific tool to pull more detailed data on the files.
Any advice or suggestions at all would be appreciated. Thanks...

Where exactly are you trying to watch these? On a PC or through your TV's built-in DVD Player?

If it's on a computer... honestly, the easiest fix is to just install this codec pack from this site.

If the issue is with your TV's DVD Player, you'll probably need to demux those two movies into a codec that actually uses 😁those three. AVI is really just a container for codecs and stuff, not an actual codec itself.

The problem is usually something like this:
- Those 3 movies you can play are .avi files using a codec your DVD Player recognizes (probably Xvid, maybe even MPEG-4 if it's newer enough)
- The other two are in a codec the DVD player doesn't support (like DivX or H.264).

To turn your current .avi into one that works on your DVD player, you could try using this program. I haven't touched it in a while, but it's probably not that hard to figure out. It actually lets you convert the .avi codec—which most converters suck at—and you can even burn subtitles directly into the video.

I guess the rule of thumb is... whenever you get a new DVD player (or if you're trying to watch movies via USB on a digital receiver like I do, though mine only handles MPEG-2)—you should check which codecs it supports first. Then you'd have to convert all your movies to that specific codec before burning them to a disc.

To find out what codecs or formats are inside an avi container, you might want to just install VLC on your PC. Open the video, right-click the screen > MediaInfo.

You don't even need VLC for this. Just grab a little tool like MediaInfo and call it a day.

It’s likely just an issue where some files were encoded in XviD HD, which most standard DVD Players simply aren't equipped to handle...

Are we talking about a standalone DVD Player here, or just a standard PC DVD drive?

Sorry for the late reply... I’m talking about a standard Blu-ray Player here... and there's another thing. If I have, say, a Blu-ray Player that handles DivX, and it's hooked up to an old-school analog TV—one of those vintage models—what’s the best way to convert files? I've noticed some DivX files from ETRG play perfectly fine, but others just won't budge. To be clear, those are two separate issues. That was my first question, and now this second bit regarding the older TV setup...

Could you please run one film that’s failing and one that’s working through MediaInfo, then share exactly what the program reports for each of those two files?
