How to download YouTube videos?

Please forgive my intrusion with such an elementary inquiry.

How does one go about downloading a video from YouTube? I attempted to utilize VLC media player, yet it proved unsuccessful. I also tried directly through Opera—version 76, if I recall correctly—but that too failed to yield results.

In a final attempt, I installed a free YouTube downloader, but upon double-clicking to launch the application, it simply refuses to open.

I am currently running Norton Antivirus along with some sort of ad blocker; could it be possible that these programs are interfering with the process?

I recall a time when a specific YouTube downloader worked perfectly for me; I would simply download, install, and everything functioned seamlessly. I have always been quite fond of using older versions of software. I attempted to run an older iteration of this particular program, but my antivirus immediately deleted all the setup files associated with it.

What, then, is my best course of action?

If you're looking to get snaptube onto your phone, just a heads-up—you won't find it sitting there on the Google Play Store, since they don't carry it! You'll need to grab it via a direct download link instead, or perhaps look into an alternative app store like APKMirror

My God, everything was so much simpler back in mid-to-late 2015, wasn't it? Back then, YouTube wasn't constantly blasting ads at you.

Why don't they just offer a simple solution: log in and you're allowed to download, say, 2-3 gigabytes of video per month without all the advertisements, and that's it? They claim to be protecting copyright, yet it seems the actual creators are the ones being most neglected in this whole ordeal.

RealPlayer comes with Free Download Manager.

I have successfully installed the extension for Chrome. I was occupied with some other tasks and merely needed to provide one final confirmation allowing the extension access to my data so it could monitor my browsing history—but the fine print was far too minuscule, at least for someone with my poor eyesight. By the time I realized what was happening and clicked confirm, the download had already finished in an instant.

I am not quite up to attempting any video downloads right now; I shall update you in a day or two regarding whether it works. Hopefully, everything functions as intended.

On my desktop, I usually stick to using youtube-dl via the command line or just grab the youtube-dlg GUI if I'm feeling lazy.

I lean toward youtube-dl most of the time. Honestly, you just get way more flexibility than you ever will with a GUI.

As for my phone, I just run NewPipe on Android.

I am searching everywhere for the download icon, but it simply isn't there. Every other feature offered by the extension is visible, yet the download option is missing. That specific button should have appeared either at the top of the video player or at the bottom alongside the other icons, but it is nowhere to be found. I attempted to locate the basic instructions by clicking HERE, but they aren't listed there, even though I distinctly remember seeing them yesterday.
