HDMI to VGA adapter not working

Hey everyone, I could really use some help here. I have this older monitor that only has a VGA port, so I picked up an HDMI to VGA adapter today so I could hook it up to my graphics card's HDMI output (GTX 1650). It was working perfectly fine when I first plugged it in earlier this afternoon, but then everything suddenly stopped working tonight after I did a quick system restart. The monitor itself seems totally fine since it works without any issues when I plug it directly into the motherboard's VGA port using the integrated graphics, but through the adapter, I just get no signal at all. I guess it's possible the new adapter just died on me after only a few hours of use, or maybe there's something else going on? Does anyone have any ideas about what might be happening?

When you plug into the VGA port on the monitor, does it actually say "no signal," or is the screen just dead black?
Does the monitor even react at all when you boot up the PC?
Have you tried plugging the HDMI adapter directly into the motherboard (assuming there's a port available)?

You might want to check your BIOS settings; there's a chance it defaulted back to the integrated graphics on your motherboard instead of your dedicated card. If this started happening immediately after a restart, that’s likely the culprit—the system just decided the onboard chip was the primary option again.

It's a fairly common issue with those types of adapters. To give you more specific advice, though, we really need to know which motherboard you're running. Once we have that, we can actually be useful.

Thanks for all the input. Last night, I tried connecting my TV via HDMI directly to the GPU, and everything looked perfect. Then I switched back to the monitor using the adapter, and it worked flawlessly all day today. But then, once the computer went into sleep mode last night, it just quit on me—now I'm stuck using the VGA output from the case again. It seems like the adapter itself is fine, so maybe it’s one of those settings mentioned above? I'll try digging through the BIOS if I can figure out my way around there. My motherboard is an MSI H110M

Edit: I actually managed to find the graphics settings in the BIOS. Even when I try switching the setting from CPU to PCIe or even Auto, the adapter still won't output anything. To make matters worse, as soon as I plug back into the VGA, the BIOS resets itself back to CPU mode. I guess I'm just not quite sure what's going on here

Second edit: I really have no clue what's happening. It feels like for some reason, whenever I connect the monitor using the adapter, the computer automatically defaults to the integrated graphics and refuses to show anything on the monitor. If I hook the TV up directly via HDMI to get into the BIOS, and then while I'm in there, I plug the monitor in through the adapter, the image pops up normally. However, the moment I exit the BIOS—regardless of whether I change something or just exit—the monitor goes black during the boot sequence and stays that way. I'm definitely not a tech expert, but this seems pretty strange to me. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be happy to hear them.

Does the BIOS actually save changes?
It’s possible your CMOS battery died, so the BIOS just resets to defaults every single time you boot up.
