I really felt the urge to write something about this one Sci-Fi film from my childhood—it holds a very special place in my heart.

It’s rarely brought up in conversation, and I know it wasn't exactly a critical darling, but for me, this movie just has soul. It truly does.

The whole thing is solid from start to finish, and honestly, Charlie Sheen’s performance is just fantastic.

I'm curious to hear what you all think about it. I realize nobody here is going to jump in and claim it's a cinematic masterpiece—nor am I expecting that—but to me, it's such a dear little 90s Sci-Fi gem from my younger years. All things considered, it's a good—really quite good—Sci-fi film.

I think I’ve probably watched this movie at least ten times in my life. 🤣

In my opinion, the effects were more than impressive for 1996—they actually were. The CGI for 1996 was seriously: 🙏

The plot itself is incredibly engaging; there's this mystical, mysterious vibe to it, especially the parts filmed in Mexico. This movie always takes me back to my younger days when I was—and still am (well, for as long as I live)—absolutely obsessed with Sci-Fi.

I remember renting this out from the local video store at least four times throughout the 90s. 😁

My rating? A solid 7/10.

P.S. If you're a fan of Sci-Fi and somehow haven't seen it, please give it a chance. I don't think you'll regret it. Most of you have probably already caught it, but if you haven't—consider this a little recommendation from the past. The film has been largely forgotten, but it remains so precious to me—haha, it's just one of those movies.

Cheers,

Feels familiar, but I can't even remember if I've actually seen it. I'm big on those 90s flicks, so I'll definitely be checking this one out soon.

Well, you absolutely HAVE to watch it if you haven't yet—the movie really screams "90s vibe." It's genuinely engaging, and honestly... for 1996, the CGI is more than just good; it's fantastic. You can tell they didn't skimp on the budget back then.

But what makes it special for me is the atmosphere—especially since I grew up watching it, which adds a certain layer of nostalgia.

The story itself is solid, and Charlie Sheen’s performance is top-tier. He really nailed the role; he was surprisingly great in this kind of part. He played it totally straight.

P.S. I think this one got somewhat overshadowed by the massive alien blockbuster hits of that era, but this is a film made with real soul and style—it has its own unique identity.

To me, this feels like a much more serious film than Independence Day was that year. While Independence Day is a massive blockbuster that plays heavily on spectacle, this one feels more in the vein of The X-Files—great effects paired with a compelling plot, aka a more substantial movie than ID4 (don't get me wrong, I love ID4 too, but you know what I mean).

Here's the trailer so you can see if you've caught it before:

Great SF movie, especially the unique way aliens infiltrate us by taking on human form

Back on your thread again,

It was a solid film; I caught it while relaxing at my cabin up north over the weekend.

When I dropped it off at the local video rental shop, I told the owner it actually holds up better than Independence Day, and he couldn't disagree.

It seems like nowadays, people aren't really interested in making those more atmospheric, mysterious alien movies anymore, are they?

👍

Instead, the trend seems to be producing "zombie" content for this younger generation—they just swallow whatever is served to them on a silver platter. Creative spark? Zero.

Social awareness? Zero.

Musical taste? Zero.

So, tell me—how could anyone expect these kids to actually distinguish between a good film and a bad one?

But honestly, I don't blame them; they're a lost cause, and frankly, I almost feel sorry for them.

Can you even imagine how many 20-year-olds today would actually have the patience for a movie like this? Probably not even 10%. And why? Because to them, this kind of storytelling might as well be quantum physics.

An absolutely stellar film.
The whole premise about aliens infiltrating Earth to sabotage humanity via global warming feels even more relevant today than when it first hit theaters.
Charlie Sheen delivers a masterful performance as the eccentric Dr. Replacement—he really nails that energy—and Ron Silver is equally impressive as the primary antagonist.
Kill me now, but I honestly have a sneaking suspicion that this character might have actually influenced the creation of Gordon Freeman from Half-Life.
It never quite got the massive hype it deserved, mostly because it got completely overshadowed by the blockbuster Independence Day, which was released around the same time.
There is also an equally solid sequel from 1998 called Second Arrival, which remains somewhat of an underrated gem itself.

Man, watching this at the AMC theater was such a trip 😁 since nobody else seemed to care... I can actually still picture the whole plot
it’s like those old-school directors don't even make movies like this anymore
