Hey there, everyone!
So, I’ve run into a bit of a situation where I really want to beef up my PC, but I have to admit, I’m definitely not an expert when it comes to this kind of stuff, so I was hoping I might be able to pick your brains for some advice... basically, here is what I am currently running:

Processor
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E6600 @ 3.06GHz
Manufacturer
Intel
Speed
Intel speed 3.1
Installed Memory
RAM
2.50 GB
Video Card
Nvidia GeForce 210 Dedicated Memory 974 mb total Memory 2.2 GB pixel shader version 4.1 system Type
Dedicated Memory
974 MB
Total Memory
2.2 GB
Pixel Shader Version
4.1
System type: 32 bit operating system, x64 based procesor
Windows 10

What I am thinking is that I would love to upgrade things a little bit—maybe swap in a better graphics card... or perhaps add a bit more RAM... and so on... just generally trying to make everything feel a little snappier and perform better overall. I also think I probably need a new case, seeing as the front USB ports on my current one don't even work properly. Anyway, I am open to any and all good suggestions you might have... my budget isn't exactly massive, but I suppose there's still some hope, right? haha
thanks

It’s a fantastic card. You might run into a bit of a bottleneck, but you won't need to swap out your power supply, and the jump from the old 210 is night and day.👍

Thanks... so I guess all I really need to do is pop that graphics card in and everything else should be fine... though, if I’m being honest, I was still thinking maybe I ought to throw in a bit more RAM, and I definitely need a new case too. I was hoping to fit all of that within the $333 budget... but whatever, I appreciate the advice 🙂

So, what do you even use this PC for? If you're gaming, grabbing a new GPU is probably a solid move since you can just port it over to a better build later. But if you aren't gaming, I guess you don't really need a new card at all.

You might want to look into a new case and an SSD. Honestly, messing around with the RAM or CPU probably isn't worth the headache because that whole platform is basically a decade old. Maybe grab another 2GB of RAM for $33, though I'm not totally sure how much you're running right now. It says you have 2.5GB, but maybe the card is hogging some, or you just installed 32-bit macOS when 64-bit would be a way smarter choice.

Well, look, I know the kid can get some gaming done when he comes over to my place... but I was browsing one of those hardware spec sites earlier and it flagged that I've only got 3 GB of RAM installed. So, I guess if I were to add, say, another 2 GB of memory... and maybe pair that with a decent graphics card and a solid case, that would actually turn this thing into a pretty capable machine, right?

Well, it really all boils down to what you intend to do with it. If you aren't planning on heavy gaming, I'd say just grab an SSD and maybe some extra RAM.

My only real hesitation at this point is whether I can actually find any chassis that I genuinely like... I mean, how does that process even work?

Download AIDA64 or Speccy, then let me know your motherboard model once you have it side-by-side with the specs.

Grab an SSD, like this one (you'll flash Windows and your programs onto it), and you should be able to find 2GB of DDR2 under $33. For the rest of the budget, just pick up a used motherboard—it likely won't cost more than $100 since your CPU isn't exactly a powerhouse. Just send over the power supply model; pop off the side panel and check what the sticker says.

That card is going to be a bit of a bottleneck, but you won't need to swap out your power supply. Honestly, the jump from your old one... it's night and day.👍

Doesn't matter. For that kind of money, you could grab a much newer, way more powerful RX 460 if we're talking about buying something new...

Actually, it really depends on which direction you want this upgrade to go. What do you actually need from this machine? I don't think you're a gamer... nobody tries to play anything serious with an N210 graphics card...
Maybe it would be better to just grab a G4400 processor for around a hundred bucks... $167 Just grab a motherboard with 4GB DDR4 RAM and you’ve got a solid new PC... You can find decent cases for about $25 around here too...

If that’s getting too pricey, just look into the C3900 or C1840 processors along with their matching motherboards and RAM... the latter uses DDR3.

Every single one of those processors absolutely crushes your...

Now that you mention it, you're talking about a kid... In that case, just head over to a local shop and look for an APU with decent integrated graphics... Something like an Intel Core i5, a motherboard, and some RAM...

Let’s be real, your CPU is probably junk, and that motherboard isn't much better. Plus, DDR2 RAM is getting pricey... What you've got there is fine if you just want to browse the web. You could always throw in a used graphics card to get a little more out of it without spending much, especially if you're local to the Bay Area...

I found this listing for a graphics card online. Looks like a decent deal if you're looking to upgrade... checking out the specs now.

You don't need to swap out the power supply for her. It doesn't pull much power and the unit itself isn't bad... honestly, it’s fifty times better than what she’s running right now.

This build is going to need a beefier power supply... especially since that GPU is such a beast...

I’m looking at this listing for a graphics card on Craigslist... wondering if anyone here thinks it's a decent deal. It seems okay, but I can't quite tell if the price is right for what you actually get. Any thoughts?

It’s reporting 2.5GB, but there's a chance your graphics card is hogging some of it... Plus, you installed the 32-bit version of macOS, when switching to 64-bit would definitely be the smarter move.

With 32-bit macOS, you're capped at addressing 3 gigs of RAM. If you aren't planning on upgrading to a 64-bit OS, there’s really no point in buying more memory... unless you just want a cheap 500MB stick of DDR2 just to have it.

What kind of games? Like Flash games on a browser or actual demanding titles?
Timothy Kim60 said:With the leftover cash, you could get a used motherboard (probably up to $100 since your CPU isn't great).

Why bother with a 775 socket motherboard? It’s not even 2006 anymore.

My mistake, I was thinking about a used GPU, not an MBO
