Great movie! But honestly, it’s got issues. The direction feels empty—the intro drags on way too long, and there isn't enough time spent at the house. The setting feels static, and that time loop? Kind of repetitive. That said, the script is solid—really hits its marks at times—and those last 20 minutes are absolutely fantastic! Also, the trailer doesn't even give you 5% of what the actual movie is about.

The whole thing has this gentle vibe, sure, but it's packed with supernatural elements, and once the monsters show up, it’s definitely not for kids. It wasn't even marketed as a children's movie, so it felt weird seeing theaters pitch it that way. This film is basically Tim Burton's The Chronicles of Narnia. If you want actual kid-friendly stuff, go with Casper (1995) or shows like Round the Twist (1989), The Girl from Tomorrow (1990), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007), or The Chronicles of Narnia (1988)—plus Mighty Max and Beetlejuice. If you want kid movies that adults actually enjoy, stick to The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) or Matilda (1996).

The monsters they used for this comedy 🤷 the scenes that aren't kid-friendly are pretty sparse, and honestly, they're all packed into the first hour (which is actually decent). The rest of the movie, from the ship onward, is just plain ridiculous. I won't even get started on the plot holes and logical leaps. Burton 👎

I actually liked the movie. After that last disaster from Tim Burton, this felt like a genuine breath of fresh air.

That girl who can levitate is just absolutely stunning 😍

I found him rather charming, I suppose. A bit eccentric, but entertaining enough, though he seems geared more toward a younger demographic. That said, he might convince some Harry Potter fans to give his work a fair shake; while he certainly isn't outperforming Harry Potter, there seem to be enough parallels that it might appeal to that specific crowd.

Eva Green isn't exactly my type of beauty, but she looks fine in the film 🙏
Samuel L. Jackson feels a bit caricatured here—it's a wasted performance, I suppose. The central conflict is pretty basic and gets resolved far too easily. Even the visuals, which are usually why I dig Burton, didn't really blow me away this time. It’s something you might watch if you absolutely have to, but I doubt any sequels would catch my interest. It doesn't even come close to HP; it's miles off the mark. I'll probably just stick to watching Fantastic Beasts and comparing them that way, because this definitely wasn't it.

I honestly found this movie pretty bad and just wasn't into it. I only went because a friend talked me into it. Even Mr. Jackson couldn't save it for me, I guess.

Man, Eva Green is just stunning, isn't she?

It felt like they couldn't decide if they wanted an original dark fairy tale where evil stepsisters actually hack off limbs or some sanitized Disney version 🤷. In the first half, the monsters are eye-gouging nightmares that seem practically unkillable—but then in the second half, we’re suddenly fighting them off with candy? (wtf? 🙂). They drop like flies. The big bad villain that the grandfather has been hunting for decades gets taken down in seconds—and apparently, there's enough time in the middle of that fight to crack jokes about needing a mint? 🤦.

I will say, I dig the cast (Eva 😍, Ava 🙂) and the first part of the film is solid while we're getting introduced to the Peculiars. The second part? No. No way. Absolutely not.

Meh. I'm not happy.

I took kids of all different ages—14, 11, and 5—to the theater, and they all had a blast. My youngest, who’s usually a total drama queen, spent the first ten minutes covering her eyes before realizing it wasn't actually that scary. So much for being "terrified."🤣
The concept is interesting, but honestly, it felt more like a parody than actual acting to me.

The books—especially the first one—are solid. I’d go as far as saying the first installment is excellent 👍. But once they board the ship? Once they arrive? That’s where the book and the movie diverge massively.

It’s pretty negligible, really... and honestly, who am I to blame? I keep giving Burton another shot, hoping he'll finally prove me wrong—but he just feels like some total nobody at this point. It isn't even like "creative chaos," it's just... messy.

I only made it through the first book; sure, it starts off okay, but then things drag—it just gets incredibly tedious toward the end. I couldn't wait to put it down, and honestly, I have zero interest in picking up the sequels.

The movie was much the same, except from the moment they board the ship—as far as I can remember—it completely abandons the novel's plot, and the quality drops faster than a stone...

Anyway, I'm just glad I didn't waste my money on a ticket at the AMC...
