Hey everyone! I’m heading off to college soon and I really want to declutter my laptop—getting rid of all the digital dead weight so it actually runs smoothly when I need it. I’ve got about 100GB of stuff sitting there—photos, games, music, you know the drill. My big question is: should I just grab a cheap 128GB thumb drive, or would it be smarter to invest in a portable external hard drive? The USB stick is definitely easier on the wallet, but I’m worried about how long it’ll actually last. Which one is more reliable in the long run? I’m looking for something that won't just die on me after a year or two. What would you guys recommend if I want something dependable? 🤔 🤔

Personally, I’d lean toward getting an external hard drive—especially if your laptop has a USB 3.0 port. You should definitely pick up a high-speed USB stick or a portable USB 3.0 drive, too. Since you'll be moving pretty massive amounts of data, wouldn't you rather have those faster transfer speeds to save yourself some time?

An external hard drive tends to have a much longer lifespan, right?

Hey, it might not really matter, but there’s a basic difference—a USB drive is just a single flash memory chip, whereas a portable hard drive is basically the same setup as an internal desktop drive, complete with those spinning platters and a read/write head. So, if you happen to be a bit rough with it—say, tossing it on your desk without much care—that portable drive is way more likely to give up the ghost than a simple USB stick 😁. The catch, though, is that portable hard drives usually come with much larger capacities, which makes sense since they offer way more storage than a thumb drive. Personally, I have a portable hard drive that’s already five years old; I just keep it tucked away in a drawer and pull it out maybe once a month at most, and I've never run into any issues with it...

When you say "USB," you mean a standard thumb drive, right?
Honestly, stay away from those cheap 128GB flash drives.
Actually, if you already own one that feels suspiciously cheap or sketchy, just toss it. Seriously. Don't let the temptation hit you to store anything important on it.
