Greetings. I have a question regarding the maximum RAM capacity for this specific build. I stumbled upon some info online claiming the limit is 4GB, but I can't tell if that’s the total capacity or the limit per individual slot. Also, what specific specs should I be obsessing over if I want the fastest possible memory without causing a compatibility nightmare with the rest of my hardware? Everything else is standard. For now, 😁

Thanks in advance.

Take a look here:

http://www.cnet.com/products/hp-comp...-series/specs/

Under the Memory section, it shows the max capacity is just 2 x 2 GB—so 4 GB total. It also says DDR2 667 MHz is the only supported RAM speed, which happens to be both the fastest and the slowest 😬 option they allow...

Thanks for the reply. What’s the deal with those 5300 and 6400 speeds? Does the specific rating of the RAM I install actually matter? Forgive me, but as you can tell 😁
, I'm clearly no expert on this stuff.
And one more thing—my processor is running at 2.0 GHz (that old Turion TL-60)... would I see any real difference if I swapped it out for something slightly beefier, like a TL-66 or a 68?

I'm also looking into installing an SSD, because whenever I try to watch anything remotely demanding (like high-res MKVs), the audio gets out of sync and the video lags behind.

Which of these upgrades should I prioritize to fix that lag issue first?

PC6400 runs at 800MHz while PC5300 hits 667MHz. Theoretically, 800MHz RAM works fine on a slower bus—it just clocks down to match the speed—but sometimes things get glitchy during that handoff. If you don't absolutely have to, skip the PC6400.

You probably can't swap out the CPU anyway. Even if you managed to find a compatible chip (which is a long shot) and if it isn't soldered directly to the board, you'd likely run into massive compatibility issues. But honestly, your biggest bottleneck is the integrated graphics, which you can't change no matter what.

There's a 99% chance your laptop won't support an SSD. It's too old for that, and I highly doubt there's some magic BIOS update waiting to be released that would make an SSD work. Too bad...

Laptops aren't really built for upgrades in the first place, and your platform is ancient. It was never designed to be anything other than a basic machine where you might swap some RAM. I wouldn't bother pouring money into this thing; it won't help. Too bad...

Alright, I just dug up some info confirming the motherboard is compatible with a 2.3GHz processor, and apparently, it’s swappable.

I also spotted a listing for a similar laptop equipped with an SSD, so I’m assuming they can be paired up. Though, I’ve read stories about people running into compatibility headaches, so I won't hold my breath.

As for the RAM, I am absolutely planning on boosting that in the next few days. Will this single upgrade actually make any noticeable difference in performance? Most of the time, I just use this laptop to download games via torrents and watch them. 😁
