image

GENRE: Animation / Fantasy

DIRECTOR: Mark Osborne

CAST (VOICES): Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Paul Rudd, Marion Cotillard, James Franco, Benicio Del Toro, Ricky Gervais, Bud Cort, Paul Giamatti, Albert Brooks, Mackenzie Foy

RUNTIME: 108 minutes

The film made its big debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 22nd, with its US release slated for March 18th, 2016.

We finally get an animated take on the legendary masterpiece by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry—the brilliant The Little Prince—hitting American theaters this November.

At its core, we follow a little girl whose mother is systematically grooming her for the "real world" of adulthood. Everything shifts when she meets her neighbor, an eccentric yet kindhearted aviator.

Through him, she’s introduced to a breathtaking new reality—one that was originally paved by The Little Prince himself. As she follows his magical, emotional trail, she wanders through the landscape of her own imagination into a stunning universe. It's a journey toward rediscovering the sheer value of childhood, ultimately teaching her that human connection is everything, and that the essence of life can only be seen with the heart.

I know I’ve already given this one a shout-out, but here we go again
Seriously, this movie is incredible. Definitely worth your time if you're looking for something good.

I didn't really care for this movie—it lacked both the soul and the depth I was looking for, and it certainly failed to capture the magic of the original book. The first half is decent enough, mostly because the core story has a certain charm that’s hard to completely lose even if you try, but that second half? That gloomy, dark, action-heavy segment with the transformed version of The Little Prince was just awful... exhausting, really, and not at all in the spirit of the source material. I honestly wish people would post more clips online so you'd know what's coming—because going in expecting the actual The Little Prince, I practically wanted to walk right out of the theater. It felt like they thought the plot was too simple, so they just pushed the action forward and forward without anything meaningful actually happening... where is the action, baby? They forced this frantic energy onto the characters, turning it into some sort of dark version of Hotel Transylvania.

The second half isn't quite hitting as hard as the first, but it’s not a total disaster either.

That gloomy, dark, action-heavy segment with the transformed version of The Little Prince was just awful—so exhausting and completely out of sync with the spirit of the book. I wish people would just post screenshots online so you'd know what's coming, because going in expecting the actual Little Prince made me want to walk out of the theater mid-way. It’s like they thought the plot was too simple—just one thing after another with nothing really happening—so they went, "Where's the action, baby?" and forced this frantic energy onto characters that felt more suited for some dark reboot of Hotel Transylvania.

Man, these comparisons about how it isn't "like the book" or "true to the spirit" are already starting to get on my nerves. Look, even if the title is The Little Prince, it's NOT a direct adaptation of the book.
That whole second half actually elevates the movie because it feels like something Gilliam would have cooked up.

Yeah—just Gilliam, if we're being precise.

Honestly, Gilliam is better than most directors working in Hollywood right now 😛

Exactly... and it bugs me too—the way they market it using the name, the characters, and everything from The Little Prince just to get us in seats, even though it doesn't follow the spirit at all. They use images of him and his rose in the ads, but then my kid—who has loved The Little Prince for ages—watches a devastated planet overrun by baobabs and a withered rose, and just wants to go home.
I don't know what people expect, but if I order vanilla ice cream and there's a picture of a scoop on the menu, that's what I want—or if the ice cream maker is feeling creative, at least give me something vanilla-flavored. I don't want to be handed a ham and cheese sandwich wrapped in a picture of vanilla ice cream...

Animated movies aren't just for kids, and "The Little Prince" is yet another flick that backs that up. The whole idea of "growing up without losing your soul" pops up constantly throughout the story, serving as a reminder that some things are simply impossible to outgrow. You’ll probably find some critics nitpicking the director for drifting away from the source material in the second half or getting a bit too experimental, but I wouldn't hold it against him; the core message remains perfectly aligned with the original book. Just let yourself get swept up in the magic and the journey of "The Little Prince," which ultimately exists to remind us of life's fundamental truths and warn us that while we chase our own version of a rose, we shouldn't forget what one actually looks like.

While "The Little Prince" does a great job pulling you into its world of fantasy and animation, certain directorial choices prevent it from reaching the heights set by this year's heavyweight champion, "Inside Out."

That's pretty much my take on it...

It’s not a bad flick—it carries a genuinely beautiful message—but let’s be honest, Inside Out completely ran circles around it. 7/10

I wasn't exactly holding my breath for an adaptation of The Little Prince, but I certainly didn't expect it to be such a slog. It feels a bit overextended—rather diluted, actually...

A real disappointment.
As far as the visuals go, though—now that is a total feast for the eyes 🙂
