Hey everyone! So, I’ve run into a bit of a headache with my home network. I’m supposed to be running at Gigabit speeds, but for some reason, my data transfers are getting throttled down to about 100 Mbps (which is roughly 8.5 MB/s). It feels like I'm driving a Ferrari in a school zone. Every single device I have is fully Gigabit-compatible, and since I'm using Cat7 cabling, I'm pretty confident the wires themselves aren't the bottleneck. I suspect it might just be a configuration issue somewhere in the settings, but honestly, deep-diving into networking options isn't exactly my specialty. If anyone has a few pointers or knows what I should check first, I would really appreciate the help. Just to give you an idea of the setup, I'm seeing these slow speeds when I try to move a movie file from my desktop over to my Western Digital media player, as shown in this little diagram

This is a pretty niche question for the General Purpose subforum. You might have better luck asking network pros over there—you'll actually find someone worth listening to much faster...

Look, you can claim your network is Gigabit all you want, but if your transfer speeds are topping out at 100 Mbps, then somewhere in that chain, there’s a 100 Mbps bottleneck. Period.

And if you're absolutely positive that every single piece of hardware in the line supports Gigabit speeds, then one of your end devices just isn't beefy enough to handle that much data throughput.

What’s actually going on with your setup? This should be pretty obvious if you look closely enough.

Do some troubleshooting. Start unplugging—or plugging in—components one by one until you find the bottleneck. My advice? Start simple: bypass everything and plug the two end devices directly together with a single cable.

It’s possible that this Thomson device is just hard-coded to run at 100 Mbps, so you might want to dive into the settings to see if there's an option to toggle that, and while you're at it, double-check if your media player actually supports Gigabit LAN
