So, I need some help with my desktop background. It's locked and I can't change it for some reason..
Maybe someone could explain in the comments how to unlock it, thanks.👎

Can you just explain it here? I can't follow those guides, I always end up messing something up, even with Vista. Anyway, my option to change the desktop background just vanished. Any idea how to fix it? Maybe explain in a comment.

Is it just a black background for you?
If so, Microsoft probably realized you're running some knockoff version.
Which OS are you even using?
A little more info from your end would actually be helpful.

Windows 7 Ultimate. It isn't just a black background... someone changed it and now I can't change it back. It's locked, I guess. When I try to use the change desktop background option through search, it tells me it can't do it, or that the option doesn't exist, or something like that.

Is that thing sitting in the bottom right corner of your desktop actually supposed to be there? If it isn't part of your normal setup, you're probably looking at some kind of virus or malware—but since you aren't quite sure what it is, I can't really give you a definitive answer just yet.

Is it possible someone messed with your settings and disabled the ability to change the wallpaper for your specific user account? Because that's definitely something you can do in the settings.
Also, is the account you're logging into an administrator account, or is there another admin account on the machine?
Maybe try the steps in the link below first—and honestly, that first link I sent you should still work, even if it mentions it's for Vista.

Not proven, and I doubt it's a virus. Maybe someone just locked the wallpaper settings... now it's stuck on this one image from a movie.

Try following the steps in the second link first. Even though it mentions Vista, the first one I sent should still work fine.

Yeah, someone probably changed something. There's just the one administrator, no other accounts or anything like that.

At that point, someone probably went messing around with the registry or tweaking some local group policies—it’s the kind of stuff you can find in those links I shared.

So, what happens if you just right-click on any random image? Do you actually see the "set as desktop background" option there?

Probably. But none of them actually worked for me... I guess I'll try again.

I mean, I try, but nothing happens. Just clicks and... nothing. No change at all, I guess.

Yeah, thanks. Got it working. 😁

I'm happy to help—maybe I should explain where things actually went wrong, just so future generations can learn from it 😁
