Black screen, but cursor is still showing up

Greetings,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7, and the boot process starts out perfectly fine. Once the Windows logo appears, it lingers on the screen for a bit longer than usual, but it does eventually load. However, once the cursor appears, everything goes completely black. If I press any key on the laptop, the screen flickers to a gray color, but then nothing happens.
What could be causing this? It isn't a hard drive issue, as I am certain the drive is functioning correctly.

Looks like some kind of malware might have snuck its way in. Have you tried booting up in Safe Mode? If you can get in there, maybe run something like Malwarebytes or ComboFix just to give the laptop a thorough scan.
