Hey everyone! I’m looking to finally give my ancient PC a massive overhaul and could really use some expert advice. My main goal is to get a solid machine for Photoshop—lots of graphic design work and digital illustrations—but otherwise, it’ll just be my daily driver for browsing, music, movies, and maybe the occasional light game here and there. I’m planning on replacing pretty much everything except the case and the peripherals, and I'm hoping to keep the budget somewhere around $2000-$833 if we can make that happen. Any local shops in the Washington, D.C. area are totally fine by me!

Here’s the beast I’m currently running:

CPU
Intel Core 2 duo E4600 @ 2.40GHz
Conroe 65nm Technology

RAM
4,00GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz

Motherboard
ASUS EP35-DS3R (Socket 775)

Graphics
1024MB AMD Radeon hd 6450 (Sapphire/PCPartner)

Storage
298GB Seagate ST3320613AS ATA Device (SATA)

I’m thinking about swapping out basically everything, though I’m a bit stumped on whether my current graphics card would even play nice with a modern setup, so please let me know what you think about that! As far as storage goes, I already have a 1TB external drive, so I don't need anything huge internally—maybe just something in the 400-500GB range. Thanks a bunch!

Photoshop really craves a solid CPU and plenty of RAM:

1 x Zalman 400-LX PSU, 400W, ATX12V V2.31, active PFC
1 x Intel Core i3-4130, 3.40GHz
1 x ASUS H81M-R, 1150, H81 express chipset, DDR3, 2 slots
1 x Kingston SSD 120GB HyperX Fury, 2.5", SATA 3 6G
1 x DDR3 8GB (1x8GB) Crucial, 1600MHz CL11

$867

- I guess you should check what power supply you're actually running; you'll probably have to pop the case open to see the brand and model. You might not even need to swap it out.
- An SSD would be a huge help, too. Photoshop would probably launch in like 3 seconds and the whole system would feel way faster. Maybe just keep your current 300GB HDD for storage and install the OS and basic apps on the SSD.
- There's still an extra RAM slot left on the motherboard.

You’ve got a quad-core, 8 gigs of RAM, and integrated graphics that'll handle GIMP just fine—even some light gaming. Plus an SSD so macOS 🙂 and other apps 🙂
boot fast.
Just reuse the hard drive and case from the old rig.

If you think an SSD is overkill, go this route:
1 x DDR3 8GB (1x8GB) Crucial, 1600MHz CL11
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.80GHz 4cores, Intel LGA 1155
1 x EVGA Power Supply 400W, ATX12V V2.31, active PFC
1 x Spire Kepler Rev.2 ,hladnjak, 1156/775/FM1, 96.5×51×125 mm ,92mm
1 x Asrock Intel LGA 1155 Socket A78 Chipset MB
1 x HDD WD 500GB, 5000AAKX, SATA 3, Buffer 16MB, 7.200 rpm , 8,9 ms

$836
And just stick with the old case. 🙂

Why on earth would you put a Cooler Master next to Hex?

Since we have no clue what kind of old case we're dealing with, and Intel has pretty short cables, I guess it might be an issue.

After the fifth iteration of 😬 ...it’s basically the Intel version, though I guess they just haven't updated the website yet.

Yeah, that’s the version—I actually saw it firsthand when I was putting together a PC for my sister.

No, I thought it was V1 too, but my buddy actually got the plus version delivered, so I guess they just "forgot" to update the site. It's been three months 😬

Is it just me, or is the AMD website constantly out of date? It feels like half the stuff we discuss here on the forums isn't even reflected on their official pages.

One of the very first shops where people used to pick up their components—they just can't seem to handle a simple exchange like this anymore.

fadedorca66 said:- check out what kind of power supply you're running; you'll have to pop the case open and hunt down the brand and model. Honestly, you might not even need to swap it out
- grabbing an SSD will be a total game changer for you too—GIMP pops open in like three seconds flat and the whole system will just fly. You can keep that old 300GB HDD for storage and just install the OS and your main apps on the SSD instead

So, my power supply is an EVGA Power Supply at 350W, and the case is just some budget Micro-Star thing, but yeah, basically nothing fancy with the power side of things. I’d definitely swap the PSU, and honestly, the drive too. This rig is pushing ten years old now, and hey, everything still technically works, it's just gotten super sluggish for what I'm trying to do lately! Since I'm looking at buying new stuff anyway, I'm probably just going to go all out and replace the whole setup. That SSD idea sounds awesome, though, so I'll most likely pair it up with the old HDD to save some cash. Since I'm not in a massive rush to buy everything right this second, and since AMD isn't exactly keeping their stock updated according to what 😁 mentioned if something happens to be out of stock, I'll probably scout out other shops (like Accenture, for example) to see if they carry the same or similar parts. I might still have to double-check compatibility if I can't find everything on those specific lists I was looking at.

Anyway, thanks a million for all the help everyone! 🙂

That power supply is from 2008, and honestly, you don't need to swap it out for what you're doing.

It doesn't really matter—it’s 2015 now, so if they just go ahead and buy everything brand new, they can grab a new power supply too and finally have some peace of mind.
