I picked up a laptop just a week ago and got Windows 8 installed on it, but now my hot corners have completely stopped working. You know, when you move the mouse to the edges or the corners, nothing happens—no menus pop up, and I can't get back to the main screen. Instead, I'm forced to click Start, then go to the Start screen, and once I've opened an app, I have to rely on the Windows key just to snap back to the desktop. I did some digging online and apparently this can happen because of an update... though I haven't actually run any updates myself. I just want them back. I've grown quite fond of using them! 🙂

Have you attempted system restore?

Man, I’ve been right there with you... it’s definitely not some weird glitch caused by one specific update, it's more about just staying on top of things and finally making the jump to Windows 8.1

I finally sorted my mess out just by letting the updates actually run through to completion... honestly, I can't stress enough how much you need to keep Windows 8.1 updated constantly, because if you don't, the whole thing is basically a ticking time bomb of bugs and security holes, and you really don't want to be caught slipping when things go south
