Hey there
So, I'm looking to put together a desktop build since
I'm not traveling all that much lately, so I've lost my edge when it comes to
laptops... I've been a bit out of the loop regarding desktop
rigs because I've mostly just relied on laptops, so I could
really use some solid advice here.
The setup would mainly be for multimedia and
smooth web browsing, plus a little bit of gaming. As far as
games go, I'm not exactly a hardcore gamer—hardly have the time
with work and everything. I usually lean towards Football Manager 2024, driving sims like
rFactor, and the occasional strategy game. My girlfriend also likes to jump into
a shooter now and then 🙂 But she isn't super demanding either, so
even Call of Duty 2 would run fine for her, though newer titles wouldn't
be a problem either.
When building this, I want to focus on a configuration with
real upgrade potential for when I eventually scrape
some extra cash together. Probably won't be for at least a year. So,
I’ll likely invest more upfront into a decent monitor,
a good case, a solid PSU, and a high-quality motherboard. Then, once
the money piles up, I can sell the CPU and GPU I bought now and
swap them out for something beefier.
I'm looking to spend around 3-$1167.
As for peripherals, I don't need anything except a monitor.
Micro Center has a slight edge for me since they have a branch in Cleveland. But
I'm not ruling out Future.com, Protis, or anyone else if they end up being
significantly cheaper. Paying by card.

Thanks to everyone for the help... hopefully we can piece something together...

You’re gonna have to stretch that budget a little bit if you want to actually get what you need for your goals.

Here’s what I’d suggest:

A8 X4 5600K
SPIRE KEPLER R2.0
AS ROCK FM2+ A88X EXTREME 4+
TRANSCEND 4GB 1600 MHZ
TOSHIBA 3.5" 500 GB SATA 3
LG GH24NS95 SATA
XFX 450W 80+ BRONZE
ZALMAN T4

AOC 22" IPS

Total for parts: $1380 including assembly and shipping - Future.com

Link:

A8 X4 5600K
LC CC 95
BIOSTAR FM2+ A88M
CORSAIR 4GB 1600 MHZ
TOSHIBA 3.5" 500 GB SATA 3
SAMSUNG DVD-RW SATA
LC GP3 460W 80+ BRONZE
CHIEFTEC MIDI ATX

PHILIPS 22" IPS

Total: $1323 (and hey, if they don't have it in stock in Cleveland, they can just ship it over from another branch for free if you ask nicely)

To me, this first option looks like the way to go—it gives you enough kick from the integrated graphics since you aren't planning on playing anything super heavy right now, plus you've got a solid quad-core CPU. That means later on, you can just slap in a much stronger dedicated GPU without having to swap out the processor (think stuff like an HD 7770, HD 7790, R7 260X, GTX 650 Ti BOOST, or an HD 7850—listed here from weakest/cheapest to strongest/priciest).

Also, if you noticed, both motherboards have the FM2+ label, which basically means they'll support those beefier Kaver processors down the road.

If I were in your shoes, I'd definitely grab the Future.com build. Even though the Best Buy option is a bit cheaper, the actual component quality and the warranty aren't even in the same league.

And look, I know you're probably gonna ask if there's a cheaper way to do this, so here's the deal—if you went the budget route, you'd end up with an Intel Pentium G2020 / G3220. You wouldn't get a better motherboard because all that extra cash would be eaten up by needing a dedicated GPU immediately. You'd just end up having to upgrade both parts later anyway. With this AMD setup, you just upgrade the graphics card first, and then maybe a faster CPU later if you really feel the need.

That’s pretty much the exact same way I was looking at things... my only tweak was trying to shave a few bucks off the monitor and everything else just to squeeze in a decent GPU... but honestly, if the integrated graphics can actually handle those driving sims and Call of Duty 2 games like you say they can, then I’m leaning toward your setup... at the end of the day, I just want a solid foundation—I'll build out the beast once I've actually got the cash saved up, since I'm not about to go playing fast and loose with money I haven't even earned yet. 😉The main thing is that the system stays rock solid—enough juice from the power supply and cooling that it doesn't choke under pressure... man, thanks for putting in the work and getting back to me so fast... if anyone else has some wisdom to drop, don't be shy.

I had to tweak the build a bit since some parts were out of stock—ended up swapping in a different CPU because it’s on sale right now, and honestly, it’s slightly better anyway, plus the discount makes it a steal. I also went with a cheaper monitor to balance things out, so here’s how the new list looks... planning to hit up Best Buy tomorrow to grab everything. If I missed anything or messed up the compatibility, please let me know... sorry if the Link doesn't work perfectly, just posting this from my phone.

Honestly, it seems just a tiny bit better, and with the discount, it's actually cheaper! I also went with a slightly more budget-friendly monitor to balance things out, so here is how the updated list looks... I'm planning to head out and grab everything tomorrow. If you spot any mistakes, please, please let me know—don't hold back! Also, sorry if the Link doesn't work perfectly; I'm posting this from my phone...

Are you seriously shopping at Links? They basically act as a middleman for everyone else and will absolutely fleece you like a naive kid—do yourself a favor and check out Future.com or ADM instead.☕

Unfortunately, here in Cleveland, they’re basically the only ones who actually take card payments—you know, via Visa Bank of America. If you try to order anything online, it’s all cash on delivery, and nobody is offering any kind of installment plans... correct me if I'm wrong there.

If I try to place an order online, everything seems to default to cash payments, and it feels like nobody is actually offering any installment plans or financing options at all. Please, feel free to correct me if I've got that wrong!

You’re absolutely right—I shouldn't have doubted you there. Honestly, if I were playing it smart, I'd just save myself the headache and the cash by heading straight into Washington, D.C. to pick up the components in person. It’s definitely the better move for the wallet. 🤣

But honestly, between holidays and work, I can't exactly jet off to Washington, D.C. right now—so I guess I'm stuck with Link... fingers crossed I don't get ripped off. 🙂

You could always go with something closer to your budget if you really want to save some cash on the monitor.
