So, I’m dealing with a headache on a friend's laptop (of course they handed it to me to fix). It's running Windows 7 and keeps rebooting during the startup process. At first, I thought I could just jump into Safe Mode, but there's a catch... the menu stays on screen for maybe 0.1 seconds before the Windows 7 logo pops up, followed immediately by a BSOD that also lasts about 0.1 seconds. Just a blink and you miss it. Fine, I figured I'd just pop in a Windows 7 DVD and try a Startup Repair—I've installed plenty of different versions of Windows before, but this would be my first time actually using the repair tool. But then, another issue... the DVD won't even load. I went into the BIOS and set the boot priority to the optical disc drive (there's also an option for a USB CD-ROM, but I don't think that's it, plus there's USB floppy, network, and a few other things...), so I restarted the laptop with the Windows 7 DVD inside. It asks me what I want to boot from (optical notebook drive, hard disc, etc.)... I select the optical disc and iiiii.... nothing. It just goes right back into the loop :/ One more thing, though... normally you have to hit a specific key to get to those Advanced Boot Options (where you pick Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Start Normally), but on this machine, that menu just flashes by on its own in 0.1 seconds. If that helps at all... my friend mentioned he tends to force-shutdown the laptop pretty often by holding down the power button... any help please

You might want to try resetting your BIOS back to its factory defaults first.
It feels to me like the AHCI protocol setting might be misconfigured—it really depends on how your specific machine is set up.

Thanks for the help... I'm pretty sure the issue is 99% the hard drive. Something probably fried or just gave up the ghost... feel free to delete or lock this thread

What makes you so certain about that?
