I started a debate over on the "I don't get it..." thread in the Women's Corner, using this post:

The discussion really took off, and the mods actually split it into a brand new thread:
"Something is rotten in Denmark again, or why certain guys have endless sympathy and a second chance" (I didn't pick that title, by the way)

The first few pages weren't moved so we could steer away from Nora For (that's what isadora and Tupelo suggested), which worked—we ended up talking about healthcare, democracy, socialism vs. capitalism, medical ethics, civil society, civic education, politicians, elections, Iceland, getting treatment abroad, how celebrities get treated, pirate parties, the Catholic Church... you name it.

But apparently, that wasn't enough, because they issued this moderator warning:
Tupelo said:So,
I think we can talk about this without constantly bringing up Nora.
The system and our collective (lack of) awareness have shown so many flaws that we could talk about them for days on their own.
Let the kid go her own way; we have plenty of other material to work with.

Look, maybe I'm being totally biased because I'm a parent, and I'm sorry if I am, but I think this would be fine since we have more than enough to discuss now.

As for politics, the Politics sub-forum is still the better place for those debates, so I suggest moving there. You can touch on it, just don't make it the main focus.

And then, finally, the thread was locked with this post:
Elizabeth Baker38 said:Let's stop dragging the Šitum family through the mud.

We wish little Nora nothing but the best for her treatment.

Thread is going on lock.

I'm honestly confused—what rule says we can't discuss Nora For or even let her situation spark a conversation? Nobody said anything mean about the girl, and literally only one person said something negative about the parents. But apparently, it's okay to drag other famous people into threads (even some who are deceased)? And don't even get me started on other threads in the Women's Corner where people have dragged sick people and minors through the dirt. Some people have brought up the parents of other sick children in a negative light before, and the mods didn't seem to care about that?

If, by some miracle, this doesn't belong in the Women's Corner, then why wasn't it moved to where it actually belongs?

Thanks.

Only one person made a negative comment regarding the parents, but apparently, we aren't allowed to bring up other public figures (even deceased ones) in this thread. Not to mention all the other threads in the Women's Corner where people have dragged through various sick individuals or minors?

Not forbidden? 😬

Discussing the American healthcare system or questioning the efficacy of these types of charity drives isn't, in my view, "dragging" a specific little girl. If this entire forum regularly allows people to tear down all sorts of characters using rather colorful language, why was a thread containing a perfectly civil discussion shut down?

I'm right there with you. I'd love to know why we aren't allowed to talk about Nora either.😕

I didn't close this thread because of some brand new forum rule prohibiting talk about Nora Fora or her situation, but rather because I felt like the conversation had crossed a line and stopped being a healthy discussion...
Look, everyone has shared their perspective, the funds were raised, and the little one is headed off for her treatment, so let's just be decent humans and stop picking apart a single family, and instead, let's just wish the little girl nothing but the very best...🤷

I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but if they plan on dragging her story through the news cycle for the next thousand years, why even have it posted here on the forum? 🤷

It wasn't the family being dragged through the mud, it was more like the typical American mentality—performative charity and people trying to score political points before an election.
Nobody said a single negative thing about the little girl. Honestly, only one person even wrote one negative sentence about the mother—is that really enough to shut down an entire thread?
Is that where we draw the line on a healthy debate? If it is, I’d be happy to point out about fifty other threads in the Women's Corner where that exact same line has been crossed. Pretty much in every other post, actually.

Well, I haven't actually gone back to check, but I highly doubt that was the only discussion ever held about her on this forum...🤷

Nobody has said a single negative thing about the little girl, and there was just one person who made one negative comment about her mother, so I really wonder if that's actually enough reason to shut down the whole discussion...

But now that we've shaken loose all that talk about scoring political points and the national temperament, plus all the laughing over people clogging up the Facebook wall of a struggling local hospital, I'd say the conversation has pretty much run its course...

I suppose I agree. Especially since the moderator specifically asked everyone to stop making it about Nora, yet people just ignored that and started dragging Nora's mother instead.

So one single post equals a smear campaign?

And honestly, the moderator did such a "great" job asking for space that a former mod and an ex-admin actually had to step in and ask what she was even trying to say or what the topic was.

It’s possible, but we always end up back at the same point: someone posting on the Women's Corner might not actually want to head over to a major news site like CNN or the New York Times just to argue about it. I mean, if you started the conversation here—on a forum where people discuss literally everything from politics to pet ownership (just look at those crazy threads about aggressive dog owners)—then you could have easily just kept the discussion right here. Why go anywhere else?

Let's try being reasonable here and not shut down legitimate topics just because someone finds them distasteful or "in bad taste."

Dragging the late Boris Šprem through the mud—especially using outright falsehoods—doesn't exactly strike me as "crossing a line" worthy of a moderator warning, let alone a full-blown thread lock, does it?😕

...this isn't even really about the topic itself, but more about why anyone would bother starting one in the first place,
honestly, is there anything more utterly ridiculous than the whole process of editing an intro
after you've already sat through four full posts... 😢

Elizabeth Baker38 said:Once the political grandstanding dies down, the public mood shifts, and everyone starts bickering over Facebook posts about some underfunded local hospital, my take was simply that the conversation had run its course.

Oh, really? You can't just claim "the conversation has run its course" as an excuse. Anderlon doesn't exist to shut down discussions whenever they get messy. The moderators are here to scrub or penalize posts that break the rules—that’s their job—but that definitely isn't the same thing as saying, "Well, I guess we're done talking now."

I'm speaking as a long-time member (and also as a mod), because I have no interest in seeing this forum turn into whatever the moderators personally feel like reading. This isn't a stuffy university seminar or a textbook; it's the raw, unfiltered voice of the people. So, let them talk.

Michelle Phillips54 said:they just ignored that and moved straight into dragging Nora's mother through the mud.

The two biggest attacks on Nora's mother (in posts that haven't been scrubbed yet) are these lines:

"now even I'm getting pissed off (the mother, let's be clear here).
(...)
To me, this mother seems more and more like a total patient.
"

I honestly think it would take me maybe 34 and a half seconds to find much harsher rants against specific people in the same PDF—and that’s without even quoting comments about the late Boris Šprem on the same thread—that didn't manage to offend any moderator's fragile ego; in fact, those comments actually knew how to serve as decent local banter.

So, I suppose "how Arsen gets a million bucks and a new liver" is just some moderator wit and not an actual jab at Arsen Dedić?

Does anyone else remember that poster from back in '88? "In our society, everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others"—basically a direct lift from Animal Farm. Get creative, man. Nora For has a resourceful mom and a dad who really know how to stir the pot; honestly, any marketing agency in the States should be taking notes. If her folks weren't so stubborn and sharp-tongued, she wouldn't have half this edge. But hey, when you're backed into a corner, you use every connection and skill in the toolkit. We're practically pros at that.

It’s just an ad hoc frenzy followed by a lightning-fast mobilization of resources. Americans only seem to get things done under pressure—intense, crushing pressure...

Brenda Cook4 said:Actually, Anderlon doesn't just shut down threads on a whim. The moderators are here to clean up or penalize posts that actually break the rules, and saying "this thread has run its course" definitely isn't one of those rules.

I wouldn't say that's quite right. What Anderlon actually said was that we don't close threads just because they're getting old. We close them when the rule-breaking becomes so constant that it's impossible to manage, or when a thread becomes totally pointless and just keeps circling the same drain over and over again. Those are the ones that should be locked. 🙂

Elizabeth Baker38 said:Now that all the political grandstanding has settled, the national mood has shifted, and everyone's busy laughing at the chaos on the local hospital's Facebook wall, my gut feeling was just that the discussion had naturally reached its end.

That’s pretty much the gist of it. I took a little look back through the thread, and honestly, the whole thing just spiraled into a total mess of random nonsense. Ultimately, the decision on how to handle a thread falls to the ZK moderators; they work alongside the super-mod to decide if a lock is necessary. The administration is perfectly fine with whatever they decide.
