World Championship Handball: America vs. Spain 27-25

A loss? Absolutely not. No math required here. I refuse to entertain the idea. I’m expecting a gritty fight, sure, but ultimately a routine, convincing win for Team USA. We’ve only dropped one game out of our last six. Spain's only real advantage is playing on home soil.

And finally, I find myself in total agreement with what the French captain said recently:

"...there aren't any easy opponents left, but you can't exactly dream of being champions if you spend your whole time trying to dodge the heavy hitters..."

I honestly don't get why everyone is so terrified of France. Sure, they might be a tier above us and the stats might favor them, but they aren't invincible. They have flaws just like anyone else—you won't know until you step on the court and test them. Just look at the Germany vs. France matchup.

Either we fight tooth and nail all the way to the finals—maybe even taking the trophy—or we don't bother proving our worth at all. It's everything or nothing! Let the cowards be afraid. It's easy to sit back and calculate how to avoid the big teams, but let's actually go out there and face them head-on! Pih 🙂

Let’s not go bringing up the French before we actually have to face them. We’ve had guys like Balić and Lacković on our side with ten healthy fingers, and we certainly saw what that kind of talent can do... The younger players either crumble under the pressure when they step up against a powerhouse like France, or they go in playing too loose without any respect for the opponent. They need to let the veterans gain some experience first. There isn't really a third option 😬 And please, don't assume Omeyer and his crew are going to suffer another defensive collapse like that anytime soon, because they won't 🙂 So, if we could just be (for once 🤣) smart about this, maybe rest some of our key players for part of tomorrow, and let the Spanish squad, the crowd, and the refs handle the rest. Come on, Šterbik ☕

Knowing our guys, they’re going to push hard for that fifth-place finish in the tournament. Why should we be intimidated by France? It’s actually quite simple: they simply have more depth and outclass us across every single position on the field.
Tomorrow presents the perfect opportunity for Stepancic, Mandalinic, and Sprem to get about 40 minutes of solid playing time under their belts. As for the Spaniards, I’m honestly not sure if they’ll play it as calculated as they did back in Germany, especially considering the energy from the crowd. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see.

We were recently in top form, looking absolutely convincing on the pitch, only to have everything fall apart in the semifinals. Why? Well, we touched on this before, but there was one crucial factor we overlooked. We were stuck in an absolute gauntlet of a group. The Americans were just strolling through, even managing a loss against Iceland that kept them from taking first place in the group. Then they had to grind out a tough match against the Spaniards, which lasted until the very end—and honestly, even we Americans didn't quite make it to the finish line there. After we slogged through six grueling matches while they only dealt with one real struggle, you can see where the fatigue sets in. We ended up facing the Canadians for bronze because, frankly, we were just better, despite the mental exhaustion.
Now, let's see if the Americans have to deal with Iceland again, followed by the Spaniards and then the Danes (though their group was practically handed to them on a silver platter). If they manage to push through all that and somehow still show up to the final feeling fresh, focused, and ready to take us down—assuming we even make it to the final at this point—then what is there left to discuss? 🤷

It isn't just that the French guys are better; it's that our styles just don't mesh. They almost always show up playing at their absolute peak when they go up against us.

Yeah, we definitely need to throw the younger kids into the mix—mostly just to give the veterans a breather.

The Spaniards didn't just get rolled in Germany. I mean, they actually had us on the ropes during the first half and played way better than we did, but then our guys stepped up and put together a totally insane second half.

It’s reminiscent of what happened in Beijing—except this time, we were the ones holding the lead. Just a total, inexplicable meltdown where a guaranteed medal slipped right through our fingers. Honestly, even though we eventually got our revenge and they ended up taking bronze in London, I still can't stomach the memory of that loss. It stays with you.

That’s exactly why I believe the two-group system with point carryovers is superior. Under the old format, you practically had to win every single match just to stand a chance at reaching the semifinals—there was zero margin for error and no room for tactical maneuvering. Now, we have this added layer where you can essentially pick your path through the bracket without all that unnecessary stress. But honestly, why are we even debating the mechanics? At the end of the day, everyone is just chasing the championship in the 😁 😁

I don't think winning is some absolute must-have right now. If things go south, I guess the refs might just lean a little too hard in favor of the home team and we'll end up crashing and burning...

I feel like we should just go into this game without all that extra pressure. Not like we're playing scared or anything, but if it goes well, great—if not, it's fine. There’s really no point in draining ourselves against the Spaniards...

Just knowing how we usually think and act, I don't think we'll even blow it early on. We'll probably charge in like crazy, tire ourselves out, grab a lead, and then just completely collapse. I’m really rooting for Goluža to pull off the win here. Honestly, over these last six years, the only major handball tournaments I’ve truly looked forward to were because of that intense matchup between France and America.
