Jesus Christ, is it really that hard to just plan ahead around peak rush hour? Just catch the subway fifteen minutes earlier and you'll have a much smoother ride. Or, if people like that get on your nerves as much as they do mine, just walk or grab a bike. It’s way better for your body and keeps your brain from feeling fried. 😛

Look, there's no way I'm walking all the way from the West Side to downtown right now.

Honestly? Getting to the square from the West Side takes me just as long by bike as it does on the light rail.

This is such an interesting topic that I’d honestly love to bring up over drinks at a local pub, but since I don't want to start a whole new thread, I'll just jump in here. To be fair, when they're riding the subway, they actually cause the least amount of trouble. At worst, they might bump into you in the aisle, or if you're sitting down, they'll press their midsection right against you. Or you'll have a group of them standing at the station blocking the entire exit because they're so desperate to squeeze inside, and instead of making room for you, they just glare you down.
Outside of public transit, though, they become way more dangerous. When they walk down a sidewalk, they move in a way that seems specifically designed to cause maximum congestion and total chaos. It’s actually kind of fascinating to watch.
For a while, I genuinely thought they were doing it on purpose—like maybe it’s some weird way of venting frustration or something—but then it hit me that they subconsciously drift in a way that creates bottlenecks or even causes accidents whenever possible.
Here’s a perfect example: I was riding my bike along the sidewalk near Yankee Stadium. They had ripped up a strip of the pavement right down the middle to install some utility lines. I was coming up behind this lady and thinking, "Okay, this is easy; she’s strolling along on her side, I’ll just pass her on the other side, and the middle is clear since there's just that shallow trench where the asphalt was cut." But nope! At the absolute worst moment, she veered right toward my lane, and in my scramble to avoid hitting her, my tire caught the sharp edge of the dug-up pavement, sending me flying straight through a chain-link fence. And get this—she didn't even blink.
I once saw one of them force both a city bus and a semi-truck to slam on their brakes just because she decided to use her "right" to cross at the crosswalk... it was just 🙂
Those are just a few instances. Just to be clear, I'm not talking about women in general, but those old-school characters who move like they have a death wish and somehow manage to give everyone else a heart attack in the process.
