Lords of Salem (2012/13)

I mean, if someone went into this expecting something else, they clearly have zero clue what they’re getting into. Like, seriously, they haven't a prayer.
Personally? It actually landed pretty well for me. Honestly, it was even better than I thought it would be.

kind of like that vibe you get from The Shining.

Comparing zombie flicks to Kubrick is like comparing a cheap fart to Chanel perfume! Even though I’m not a huge fan of Kubrick’s The Shining, this movie is just straight-up garbage. His contemporary, Ackerlund, has actually grown into a really solid director, whereas zombie filmmakers seem stuck being singers who just direct cheap, trashy horror movies. With all due respect to the late Sid Haig, who basically carried these films on his back through pure charisma, there isn't a trace of that here. And honestly, getting worked up over his starlet wife Sheri isn't really my thing; I'd rather watch an adult film. It’s boring, uninspired, and feels totally routine, made even worse by the silly music from that untalented guy John. I wasn't expecting much, but this is a total disaster!

I wouldn't go so far as to call this a "good" movie or a masterpiece of quality, but if you look at it as a stylistic exercise on the scale of a small indie production, it actually works quite well.
