The Trail Blazers are facing their third game in three days—a classic back-to-back-to-back stretch. They picked up wins in their first two home games, but now they’re heading onto the road to face the Warriors, a team that has dominated them at home, winning 10 of their last 11 matchups. Portland tends to struggle on the road when playing on zero rest; they’re sitting at a dismal 1-4 in those specific scenarios this season. That said, they actually played in both previous days leading up to this one. They cruised past the Memphis Grizzlies last night, but it came at a cost—every single starter logged over 30 minutes.
It's obvious Portland has more raw talent than Golden State, but let’s not forget how the Phoenix Suns looked on a back-to-back recently—a brutal 25-point blowout loss.
I initially considered a heavier mid-range play here, but I changed my mind for two reasons. First, Golden State is struggling, coming off three straight losses and an ugly 0-6 stretch against West opponents. Second—and this is purely personal—I just can't bring myself to bet against the team I root for.😁
The reality is that Golden State is much fresher; they’ve only played twice in the last six days. They’re at home, where they have a long history of handling the Trail Blazers. Monta Ellis has been in incredible form lately, averaging a massive 32.3 points over his last four outings against Portland. Plus, having Stephen Curry back in the rotation changes everything—he always seems to find his rhythm against this squad. On the flip side, LaMarcus Aldridge has been underwhelming in his last seven trips to face the Warriors, averaging just 13.9 points with poor shooting splits.
Furthermore, Portland is significantly less efficient on the road, scoring about 13 fewer points per game than they do at home. That’s a substantial gap.
I expect big performances from Ellis and Curry—Wesley Matthews and especially Nelson Felton aren't going to have an easy time containing them. Other matchups should be competitive. Ben Wallace dealt with some minor finger issues last night, but he should still be able to dominate Chuck Wright on both ends of the floor. Aldridge holds a clear defensive edge over Chris Lee, though the advantage in the offensive department is narrower.
Ultimately, this pick rests on Portland's fatigue, their struggles in these specific scheduling spots, and the Warriors' consistent ability to protect their home court against the Trail Blazers.
