Have you ever lied about seeing a movie?

So, it’s pretty much exactly what the movie title suggests.
Have you ever found yourself stuck in a group where everyone else seems to be twice the cinephile you are, and by some stroke of cosmic bad luck, they’ve all seen this one specific movie, but somehow, miraculously, you haven't? Or maybe you're talking to someone who loves playing the intellectual, insisting a certain film is a masterpiece, and because they're being such a know-it-all, you feel compelled to lie and say you've seen it—and that it was terrible—even though you actually have absolutely no clue what happened in it, leading to a situation like:

Scenario 1
Someone asks if you've seen a particular film...

You: "Oh yeah, totally... you know, that one where (insert something vaguely from the trailer)"
Them: "Right! Yeah... absolute masterpiece..."
You: "Yeah... really great... (feeling a heavy mix of bitterness and shame because you can't even defend your own ignorance against them)"

Scenario 2 (dealing with that one person who just gets under your skin)

OsobaXY: "Hey, did you catch --film?"
You: "Wait, is that the one... (mentioning the general theme, or a plot point, or just something you saw on a poster once... the usual stuff)"
OsobaXY: "Yeah, yeah! And? Well? So? What'd you think? (giving you that wide grin where you can clearly see they've ranked it in their top five movies of all time)..."
You: (wearing a look of pure, stunned confusion, like your jaw just hit the floor)
"Yeah, I did. Honestly, it was a disaster. Nothing special..."

If nobody else has ever been caught in this trap, then I guess I'm alone in this, but if anyone has a similar story to share... 😁

The absolute worst is when you pretend you’ve actually seen a specific movie, only for them to start dissecting some intense scene, leaving you to just nod along with a hollow "Yeah, totally"...

Oh my goodness, I really did. 🤦 It wasn't even intentional, it just kind of happened.
I had been reading so much about this one movie lately—I felt like I practically knew the whole plot, plus I’d spent ages scrolling through reviews and critiques... (for some reason, I just hadn't actually sat down to watch it yet). Then, out of nowhere, someone brought the film up in conversation, and I instinctively blurted out, "Oh, I know that one!" Suddenly, the whole table went silent, and the person who mentioned it just stared at me with wide eyes, asking, "Wait, you've seen it? Isn't it incredible?" I couldn't exactly lie and say yes, so I had to admit, "No, but I've read a ton about it." 🤣

It is honestly such an awkward feeling, and besides, it's just... silly. Don't do it, kids.

Well, if you ever get caught in a lie while you're mid-sentence, just try this:
"Oh, wait, I wasn't talking about that movie. I always mix up titles."
The risk is pretty low. Besides, I've done both.

Edit: Oh, right. Sometimes I go for a third option just to stir the pot. Like, if everyone is raving about some huge blockbuster, I'll just say, "Nah, I've seen it and I'm not interested." Just to start an argument.

I've definitely been there a few times with people who irritate me enough that I just want to get away from them as fast as possible. It always seems to happen when I'm out on a Friday or Saturday night with my college friends and some obnoxious guy shows up—someone whose ego basically destroys everything in his orbit. In those moments, I'll just settle for: "Oh yeah... is that the movie? Yeah, yeah... it was good, good." 🤣🤣

Luckily, all those rom-coms are basically clones of each other, so you don't have much ground to cover when you're lying about it😛.

I usually lean on that second example just to steer clear of any debates about movies I’m absolutely certain are total garbage. But honestly, both scenarios have happened to me more than once! They make for some pretty interesting situations, though, I have to admit.

1. Honestly, there have been a few times where I hadn't even heard a whisper about a movie until people started buzzing about it.
2. Oh, for sure, I've run into several situations just like that example. Instead of some "stiff British expression," it was more like a pained grimace ala Ljuba Alicic in the "gloomy morning" music video, or maybe the face a kid makes when they're being lectured by a teacher. I have to admit, I get a little kick out of being the one to bluntly say a movie is absolute garbage.

but more like I tricked myself into believing I’d actually seen the damn thing. Like, "Of course I saw it, it's such a classic, how could I have missed it?" You know the drill—you nod along, acting like you're on board, even though you don't have a single clue about the plot, the scenes, or anything else. Someone starts raving about how brilliant it is, and I'm just there going, "Yeah, totally," before subtly trying to pivot the conversation elsewhere. 😂 🙈 Anyway, it only happened once, and it was with this one friend who acts like it's a national tragedy if you haven't seen a specific movie. He's always like, "Noooooooo wayyyyyyy you haaaaaaven't seeeeeen iiiiiit?! Are you kidding me?!" So, honestly, he bears some of the blame too. 😁

I lied.

I could try to claim it was an honest mistake or a one-time thing, but let's be real—it happened more than once. I went back and watched those movies later.

I have never actually sat through a single film by Darren Aronofsky, yet here I am, bickering with everyone over Black Swan, while simultaneously maintaining that Fontana is quite possibly the worst film ever made.
