Has anyone else ever entertained the idea of introducing a "Like" button to this forum, similar to how they do things over on Facebook?

In my estimation, such a feature would drastically reduce the endless clutter caused by people quoting brilliant—albeit often lengthy—contributions from our most insightful members just to let everyone know, "Man, you hit the nail on the head," or "I second this," accompanied by a bowing emoji.

Implementing an option like that would make our threads three times easier to navigate, and it would allow the true "stars" of the community to emerge quite rapidly, given that we all recognize how much of an ego boost a high tally of "Likes" can provide.

😁

Does any platform out there actually utilize something like this for its forums?

We’ve actually covered this topic before, and honestly, most people here agreed that it’s just unnecessary noise for the forum.
I mean, seriously, who actually needs another Facebook anyway? 🤷
Honestly, this forum would be such a mess if we had all those little stars cluttering up the posts. It’d be impossible to actually read through a thread without getting distracted by who hit the Like button on everything. Just way too much visual noise.
I could honestly go on forever about this, but I'm just not feeling the motivation to type it all out right now. 😁 I’ve already weighed in on this, just like a bunch of other people did in that previous thread.

Anyway, how exactly do you think Threads would be three times more readable if they actually added an option like that? 🤔
Basically, it’d just end up being three times more cluttered than it already is.

There have been several different threads, not just one, and that’s just since I joined—there might have even been more before my time. It hasn't been officially implemented, and honestly, I guess it probably never will be.

I honestly can't stand this whole obsession with turning everything into a Facebook-style experience. It’s completely unnecessary and just kills the actual discussions that make a forum worth visiting in the first place.

For crying out loud, this is a forum!!! 😲
All we need now is for people to start hunting for Likes here too. Honestly, screw the whole Like thing. 🙄
The whole concept of a Like button totally goes against what a forum is actually for—which is having real discussions, talking, and typing things out. Not just some retarded habit of smashing a single button. It would be an absolute apocalypse if we got an invasion of those forum "likers" who don't even bother to write anything and just go around clicking away.
I mean, at least quoting someone or saying "dude, well said" or throwing a bunch of worshipful emojis feels a bit more varied and colorful.

If you agree, hit the Like button on thisssss! 😍

(Seriously though, is that really what you want happening here?)

A massive NO!

Don't do this. It’s going to tank the quality of the forum. 🙂
People will just start hitting the Like button on posts from their so-called "online buddies" whether they're actually saying anything smart or just acting like idiots 🙂 playing those playground games "who likes who..."
Just let people have their discussions without messing with everyone's likes image and dislikes image!

Lately, I’ve been noticing a recurring trend popping up on some of the more recent online forums. For instance, underneath just about every post, there are now two distinct buttons providing options to rate the content: helpful post and unhelpful post, or something along those lines.

The setup usually displays nothing more than the total count of members who found the post helpful versus those who found it unhelpful. I suppose if you actually click on those numbers, you might see a list of the specific users who cast those votes.

It seems to me that whenever a new feature like this is introduced, there's always a bit of initial pushback on any given forum, yet once it becomes part of the ecosystem, everyone tends to settle in and accept it. It doesn't really clutter the interface either, since all you're adding are two small digits beneath the post.

I should probably mention, though, that I don't have a Facebook account. 😁

northernbear5 said:Lately, you see this kind of stuff popping up all over the newer forums. For example, under every single post, there are these two buttons giving you options to rate the content: useful post or useless post, or something along those lines.

And some forums even go a step further by basically hiding posts that rack up too many downvotes; they just won't show up at all unless you manually click a specific link to reveal them. 🤦

It’s absolutely perfect for that whole Facebook generation of brainwashed folks who couldn't care less about thinking for themselves—if a post is unpopular, it just vanishes from sight, saving them the massive mental effort of actually using their brains to process what’s being said.

Yeah, but we’re mostly talking about niche stuff here—like those specific satellite tech boards or dedicated poker forums. On some massive, mainstream site? That wouldn't even make sense. I’m just picturing myself dropping a link to some random girl over at a decorative cosmetics board... strictly for the hell of it. 🤣

I run a specialized forum—it's actually pretty huge on the American internet—and I decided against enabling that whole "Like button" feature for posts, given the reasons I just laid out.

I’m not planning on turning anything on over here, at least not until someone actually has something worth asking me
as for those people who clearly have zero thoughts of their own and just want to mindlessly mash buttons all day, feel free to go stick to Facebook or go play with your microwave
