Hey everyone.
A friend of mine is dealing with something, and she’s honestly not even sure where to start asking about it. I’m leaning toward suggesting she see a specialist for a professional diagnosis, but I wanted to get your take first.
It mostly happens during casual, everyday conversations, though it's incredibly rare when she's giving a presentation to a larger crowd. Let me try to paint a picture for you.
She’ll be sitting at her computer, wanting to tell John to turn on the TV, and instead, she says, "John, turn on the toaster." In that moment, she knows she didn't mean to say toaster, and she's fully aware she used the wrong word, yet the actual word just won't surface.
On top of that, she sometimes gets stuck repeating the last word over and over, hoping that if she says it enough times, the right word will magically kick in. For instance: "John, turn on the toaster toaster toaster..." and she'll keep going for four or five repetitions before finally stopping, sounding like a skipping record.
The main thing is that in these moments, she rarely manages to recall the correct word—in our example, the word was TV—and she basically needs someone to help her bridge that gap and get the word out.
I’ve been close friends with her for at least seven years, and as far back as I can remember, she’s always been this way, but lately, it’s been weighing on her more and more. That said, I haven't noticed any actual decline or worsening of the situation over time. So, what am I looking at here? 🤷
