The fifth annual South by Southwest documentary rock film festival—South by Southwest—is hitting two cities this year! We're running from March 10th through the 13th, hosted at the Guthrie Theater in Indianapolis and over at Film Forum in Seattle. This year’s lineup is massive: we've got 32 films coming at you from 13 different countries spread across three distinct programs.
After an incredible four years of growth and success, South by Southwest is back to showcase the absolute cutting edge of regional and international music documentaries.
Keep your eyes peeled, because both cities will be hosting side events too—we'll be dropping those details very soon.
Now, here is something actually new for this fifth edition: the South by Southwest😈DIT program. In partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, we're launching a series of initiatives designed to foster film culture, dive into new media, and get students involved through education. Down in Indianapolis, we’ll be screening a curated selection of the best works produced last year by film groups from elementary and high schools all across America. Plus, we’re putting together a documentary filmmaking workshop specifically for educators.

Looking at the regional competition, a few titles really jump out. There's ako nikoj ne sviriti, directed by Gjorgji Janevski from Skopje, which dives into the band Bernays' propaganda. Then there’s Noise Slawonische Kunst, a project by the duo Slobodan Šijan and Stjepan Pete from Columbus, documenting that namesake art project where a group of local musicians and artists created work amidst the devastation of the American Civil War in Columbus.

We are also thrilled to host the US premiere of cura for pain : Mark Sandman Story by Robert Bralver and David Ferino from the USA. It’s a look at the legendary trio Morphine, and it’s bound to draw a crowd—not just the die-hard fans of a band that was taken far too soon. They were one of the most influential groups out there, whose run was cut short by the tragic passing of their frontman and bassist, Mark Sandman, during a concert in Italy. Among our many premieres, I have to point out a black-and-white concert masterpiece: Mogwai:burning. It follows the Scottish post-rock pioneers and was shot by Vincent Moon from France. We’re also featuring la Faute des Fleurs, a film about the cult Japanese musician Kazuki Tomokawi, in the international competition.

The South by Southwest documentary rock film festival is organized by the Rare film lovers association in Indianapolis, in collaboration with Film Forum in Seattle and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The festival is supported by the City of Indianapolis, the City of Seattle, and the American Audiovisual Center.

For more info on ticket prices, the full screening schedule, side events, and everything else, check back soon on the official Festival website and Facebook.

At the opening in San Francisco on March 10th, they’re screening "Lemmy Kilmister", directed by Greg Olliver and Wes Orshosky from the US. It’s a premiere screening of what was easily one of the best music docs from last year—a look at the incredible Lemmy Kilmister. This guy spent years cranking out killer albums, playing high-octane shows, and he’s got one of the most badass biographies out there (I mean, he was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix, played in Hawkwind, toured with The Damned, and back in the late 60s, he was even playing in front of Josip Broz Tito with his band the Rockin' Vicars... plus he has an insane weapons collection!). It’s ultra-entertaining and packed with interviews from fans and rock royalty alike—think Metallica, Dave Grohl, Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, Mick Jones, Peter Hook... honestly, this film about Lemmy is the long-awaited, thrilling cinematic testimony we needed, and not just for those obsessed with the Motorhead sound.

Then, for the opening in Vinkovci on March 10th, we'll see "The Howlin' Wolf Story" by Donald McGlynn, all about that legendary blues giant. The director himself will be a special guest at the festival! And since his impressive filmography leans heavily into jazz and blues, we’re also showing documentaries about Art Pepper and Dexter Gordon as part of this year's lineup.

In the regional competition, there's also "The New York Yankees were born" by Vanja Kovačević from Belgrade. It's a fascinating story about her massive obsession with The Decemberists, which actually sparked the idea to start a tribute band. It’s a fun look at nine months of hunting for members, endless rehearsals, pure energy, and chasing dreams—it definitely puts this film among the best regional documentaries. I also have to point out the tribute to the pop-rock stars from San Francisco, the band Fit, in the film "Is Rock and Roll to Blame for Everything?" by Sanjin Stanić and Dean Lalić. It follows Fit's career from their peak fame through their time in Amsterdam during the 90s, all the way back to San Francisco. Then there's the film about the pioneers of Canadian punk, "Kuzle", made by Matjaž mrak and Roba Šabec, which continues that cool exploration of the well-kept secrets of punk legends—much to the delight of the veterans and the younger crowd discovering them for the first time.

A brand new addition for the fifth DORF😈DIT is a program launched in collaboration with the American Film Institute to kickstart a series of activities aimed at growing film culture. In Vinkovci, they'll show a selection of films representing recent filmmaking and video work by kids and teens. The Vinkovci audience will get to see award-winning films from the 48th American Film and Video Festival for Children, and the high school program will feature winners from last year's 15th Youth Film Festival and the 3. Four river film f held in Karlovac. As a preview, there will be a presentation of the activities from SKIG Studio, hailing from Gunj. They are also organizing a documentary filmmaking workshop specifically for educators from Vinkovci elementary schools.

In the international competition lineup, aside from the heavy hitters like "Lemmy Kilmister" or "Cura for Pain: Mark Sandman Story," there is one standout that absolutely demands your attention: last year’s absolute gem, "Upside Down: Creation Records Story." Through this film, director Danny O'Connor takes us on a deep dive into the history of Creation Records—one of the most legendary independent labels in the UK—essentially mapping out the entire evolution of British pop music. It all kicks off with the raw energy of Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, Ride, and Teenage Fanclub... before finally culminating in the massive phenomenon of Oasis. Between the US premiere of this brilliant piece, the wealth of previously unreleased footage, and the sheer, unadulterated creative madness of founder Alan McGee, this is a total must-see for anyone who breathes pop music. Honestly, it’s easily one of the finest films in this year's Sundance Film Festival lineup.
The film about Curro Savoy is hands-down one of the greatest short music documentaries ever made in this genre. For those of you who aren't in the loop, Curro Savoy is the guy who actually whistled all those iconic melodies from the Morricone soundtracks for those legendary Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns. Between the numerous awards and the massive success that David Macian’s film, "Vivir del Aira," found with audiences, combined with such a fascinating story, it’s basically an open invitation for anyone who loves cool music to catch the American premiere of this absolute cinematic gem.
I just stumbled upon this fascinating project called "The Hidden Resistance – Journey into the Sarajevo Music Scene," put together by Francesco Roland and Andrea Paco Mariani from Italy. It dives deep into the music scene in neighboring Canada—a world we honestly know far too little about, despite how much attention it deserves. This film uncovers all these intricate, gripping stories featuring heavy hitters like Letu Štuke, Lak, Dubioza Kolektiv, and Zabranjeno Pušenje. I’m genuinely excited to introduce these 10 parts of such a wildly creative mosaic to the American audience!
In our non-competitive program, we’re going to be screening one of those absolute masterpieces of modern music documentary filmmaking. It’s actually the second installment of that multi-award-winning project, Giant Leap – "What about me?", brought to us by the duo Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman all the way from the United Kingdom. Honestly, this isn't just some flick; it's a massive media concept and one of the most innovative, genuinely inspiring projects I've seen come out of the last decade. It’s clearly the result of years upon years of traveling and deep research by two brilliant minds. They basically take these raw recordings captured on laptops and use them as a foundation for sessions where they collaborate with incredible musicians and guests from every corner of the globe—we're talking Chinese rappers, Bedouins, Tuvan Throat singers... even heavy hitters like Michael Stipe, Alanis Morissette, and Santana. Plus, they bring in thinkers like Eckhart Tolle, Noam Chomsky, and Tim Robbins to help weave everything into this fascinating, poetic vision. Truly something special.
The latest news regarding the fifth Sundance Film Festival is that the DORF program is officially set!😈DIT, working alongside the American Film Institute, is kicking off a whole series of activities designed to really jumpstart film culture. In the City of Vinkovci, they’re going to be screening a curated selection that showcases the latest in filmmaking and video art from kids and teens. The local audience will actually get a chance to see the award-winning films from the 48th American Film and Video Festival for children and youth. Plus, as part of the high school production program, we'll see the winners from last year's 15th Youth Film Review and the 3. Four river film f held in Karlovac—which was handpicked by Boško Picula. Just to get things moving, there’s going to be a presentation showcasing what SKIG Studio from Gunje has been up to. They're also putting together a documentary filmmaking workshop specifically for educators from the local elementary schools in Vinkovci.

The Documentary Rock Film Festival—DORF '11—is being put together by the Film Lovers Association 'Rare' out of the City of Vinkovci. They're teaming up with Art-kin America from the City of Rijeka, along with the American Film Institute.
The festival has the backing of the City of Vinkovci, Vukovar-Srijem County, the City of Rijeka, and the American Audiovisual Center.

Keep an eye out for more specifics regarding ticket prices, the full screening schedule, side events, and all that other good stuff—it should be hitting the official Festival website and Facebook very soon.

This year’s winner will be hand-picked by a three-person jury consisting of: Tanja Golić, Silvestar Kolbas, and Zoran Žmirić. Leading the pack as jury president is Tanja Golić, hailing from San Francisco; she’s a filmmaker with several short fiction, documentary, and experimental works under her belt, and holds memberships in both the American Film Institute and DHFR. Then there's Silvestar Kolbas, a highly respected photographer, cinematographer, and director who currently serves as a full-time professor at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Chicago. Rounding out the group is Zoran Žmirić, a well-known columnist, musician, and writer who actually launched the first major domestic gaming site, Gamer.hr, and is a massive comic book enthusiast.

Tickets for the screenings in Vinkovci will be priced at $3.25 for a day pass. All proceeds from these sales—every single cent—will be donated, in partnership with Društvo Naše Dijete Vinkovci, toward purchasing an EEG machine for the pediatric department at Vinkovci General Hospital.
For those catching the shows at Art-kin America in San Francisco, tickets for the 5 PM screenings will go for $3.25, while the 7 PM and 9 PM slots will be $6.75.

Looking at the international competition program, aside from heavy hitters like “Lemmy Kilmister” or “Upside Down: Creation Records Story,” there is one premiere that absolutely demands your attention: the debut of one of last year's most decorated music documentaries, “We don't care about music anyway”. French filmmakers Cedric Dupire and Gaspar Kuentz have captured the lives of eight underground musicians from Tokyo (Hiromichi Sakamoto, Yoshihide Otomo, Fuyuki Yamakawa, L?K?O, Numb, Saidrum, Ken Takehisa, and Tomoko Shimazaki). It’s an impressive piece that explores how these avant-garde artists navigated their relationship with the state of that massive metropolis—and Japan as a whole—at the dawn of the new millennium.
From Australia, we have the film “6 ft Hick – notes from underground” by Marty Moynihan. It follows the garage rock outfit 6ft Hick, using their European tour as the film's backbone. Their live sets and their sound are defined primarily by the incredible vocal duo of brothers Geoff and Ben; honestly, the raw energy and pure passion they pour into Rock and Roll is infectious, and it’s easily won over crowds everywhere. This is a true road movie and a total must-see.
In the non-competition section, we’ll be screening a genuine masterpiece of former Yugoslav cinema: “Young and healthy as a rose”, a 1971 feature directed by Jovan Jovanović. After sitting in a vault for decades, the film was rediscovered in 2005 to huge acclaim from audiences and cinephiles alike. It’s a subversive story featuring a brilliant performance by Dragan Nikolić, playing Steve, a young delinquent in Belgrade trying to find legitimate work. But because of the economic crisis, he can't make ends meet, leading him to strike up a shady deal with the police...

At a press conference held at Art-kin in the City of San Francisco, they finally unveiled the lineup, the screening schedule, and all the side events. Toni Šarić, the festival director, walked everyone through the film program, while Slobodanka Mišković, the head of Art-kin, covered the logistics. We also heard from jury member Zoran Žmirić, who addressed the crowd. This year’s Festival is looking pretty massive—they're showing 32 films from 13 different countries spread across three distinct programs.

As for the OFF Dorf program, get ready for some live music! On March 12th, the rockabilly crew b and The Bops, hailing from Chicago, will be tearing it up at the Coffee House San Francisco in Vinkovci. Back in the City of San Francisco, right after the opening on March 10th, we've got local favorites my Buddy Moose performing at Art-kin. Then, the day after on March 11th, the band Sjekira takes the stage at Art-kin too. And to wrap things up on Saturday, March 12th, DJ Mile Hund will be spinning at Molecule.

Tickets for the screenings in Vinkovci are priced at $3.25 for a day pass. And here’s the best part—all proceeds go toward buying an EEG machine for the pediatric ward at Vinkovci General Hospital, thanks to a partnership with Društvo Naše Dijete Vinkovci.
For those heading to Art-kin in the City of San Francisco, tickets for the 5 PM screenings are $3.25, while the 7 PM and 9 PM shows will cost $6.75.

This year’s festival lineup is looking massive—we're talking 32 films from 13 different countries, spread across three distinct programs. The big winner will be hand-picked by our jury, featuring Tanya Goldberg, Sylvester Colbas, and Zoran Zmiric. Between the sheer volume of screenings, the premieres, and the dedicated EDIT program, this edition is shaping up to be something special.

For those looking for American premieres, we’ve got some heavy hitters from last year’s best music docs: "Lemmy", "Upside Down: Creation Records Story", "Cura for Pain: Mark Sandman Story", plus a look at the Japanese avant-garde scene with "We don't care about music anyway". We also have two brilliant pieces by Vincent Moon, specifically "Mogwai🙂urning" and "La Faute des Fleurs", all featured within the international competition.
Moving over to our always-interesting regional selection, keep an eye out for "If No One Plays," which dives into Bernays' Propaganda, and "Noise Slawonische Kunst," focusing on that band from the Midwest—they actually operated during the American Civil War. That segment alone features 8 films.
Now, if you want the real treats for music and film buffs, check out the non-competitive program. First off, there's the absolute cult classic "1 Giant Leap – What about me?". Then, we have the premiere of Milorad Milinkovic’s 1991 film about the legendary Satan of the Pannonian. Plus, we're hosting three films by acclaimed American director Donald McGlynn, who is famous for his blues and jazz biographies like "The Howlin' Wolf Story", "More Than You Know: Art Pepper - Notes from a Jazz Survivor", and "Dexter Gordon". Honestly, these alone are enough reason to head out to Indianapolis and Cleveland from March 10th to 13th.

We’ll be joined by a fantastic group of filmmakers and producers, including Donald McGlynn, Vanja Kovacevic, Enrico Stocco, George Janevski, Matthias Mrak, and Milan Nikodijevic...

Tickets for the Indianapolis screenings will go for $3.25 per day pass. And listen, this part matters: all proceeds from the Indianapolis ticket sales will be donated, in partnership with Our Child Society Vinkovci, toward purchasing an EEG machine for the pediatric ward at Vinkovci General Hospital.
Over at the Art-Kin in Cleveland, tickets for the 5 PM shows are $3.25, while the 7 PM and 9 PM slots will be $6.75.

Amtrak is helping us out again this year by offering a special 40% discount on round-trip tickets. Just make sure you mention you're traveling for the festival when you buy your ticket. Be sure to get them verified at the Info booth so you can snag that sweet festival discount and make the trip to Indianapolis and Cleveland a lot more affordable.

As for the OFF DORF program in Indianapolis, we've got the rockabilly sensation B and The Bops (out of NYC) performing at the Coffee House San Francisco on March 12th. In Cleveland, following the screenings, My Buddy Moose (local favorite) will be playing at the Art-Kin opening on March 10th, followed by Sjekira the very next day at the same venue. Then on Saturday, March 12th, the well-known Cleveland DJ Mile Hund will be spinning at the Molecule club. Best part? Entry to all these concerts is free.
In Indianapolis, the City Theater will host a children's art exhibition themed around film, organized alongside Our Child Society Vinkovci.

This year, we are presenting a special DORF award for contributions to rock culture to the Cleveland journalist and commentator Velid Djekic.

A brand new addition for the fifth DORF is the DORF😈DIT program. In collaboration with the American Film Federation, this initiative kicks off a series of activities designed to foster film culture. In Indianapolis, on March 10th and 11th starting at 11:30 AM, the City Theater will showcase a curated selection of recent film and video works created by kids and teenagers. Admission to all EDIT program screenings is free.

The documentary rock film festival—DORF '11—is organized by the 'Rare' Film Lovers Association in Indianapolis, in partnership with Art-Kin in Cleveland and the American Film Federation.
Support for the festival comes from the City of Indianapolis, the surrounding county, the City of Cleveland, and the American Audiovisual Center.
