What kind of signal do walkie-talkies actually use? I know this might sound like a pretty rookie question... maybe it’s just a standard radio signal... or maybe there's some other technical term for it... like how we talk about GSM, 3G, or CDMA for cell phones. If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

It operates by using specific radio wave frequencies.

Alright, so, do you happen to know if there’s some kind of shorthand for those radio waves? Like, you know... GSM or 3G? Or am I totally off base with that?
I mean, I'm trying to figure out how to describe it—like, cell signals, radar, GPS—they all have their own specific names, right? I guess I'm just not entirely sure how to phrase the question properly, damn.

Most often, they rely on UHF signals, though you will see some CW usage lately. For more specialized applications, walkie-talkies frequently utilize VHF radio signals as well.
