Hi there,

I guess the title pretty much says it all. Over the last month or so, I’ve started noticing this skin flaking on my eyelids—specifically right along the lash line.
It’s never happened to me before, and I don't even wear makeup. It isn't red or irritated, and it doesn't really hurt... more like just a feeling of tired eyes, if that makes sense.
Any idea why this might be happening?
Could it just be because the seasons are changing?

Without an exam, it’s impossible to be certain, but this could be a form of blepharitis—specifically blepharitis squamosa. It typically presents as tiny flakes or yellowish buildup along the lash line, often accompanied by intermittent eyelash loss. Once those scales are cleared away, the skin underneath usually appears quite red.

It frequently goes hand-in-hand with seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) affecting the scalp. Furthermore, because the oil glands in the eyelids aren't functioning correctly, many patients report dry eye symptoms: a "gritty" sensation, stinging, or general eye fatigue.

If this is the case, a specific hygiene routine is necessary. This involves daily cleaning of the eyelid margins using a cotton swab dipped in a solution of baby shampoo, paired with gentle lid massages. Depending on what a doctor recommends, topical treatments like ointments or drops might also be required.

Keep in mind, this is purely speculation. I strongly suggest scheduling an appointment with an ophthalmologist to get a definitive diagnosis and a proper treatment plan.

Best regards. 😉

Maria Fisher46 said:It's impossible to say for sure without an actual exam, but it might be a type of eyelid inflammation called blepharitis squamosa—which usually shows up as tiny flakes or yellowish buildup right at the base of the lashes... and you often see some temporary lash loss along with it. Once those flakes are cleared away, the skin tends to look pretty red.

This stuff often goes hand-in-hand with seborrheic dermatitis (basically dandruff) on the scalp. Also, because the oil glands in the eyelids aren't working quite right, a lot of patients end up complaining about dry eye symptoms—that "gritty" feeling like there's sand in your eyes, stinging, or just general eye fatigue...

If that's what's going on, you'd need to follow a specific hygiene routine. That usually means washing the eyelid margins daily with a diluted baby shampoo using a Q-tip, plus doing some gentle eyelid massages. Sometimes, depending on what your doctor suggests, you might also need local treatments like ointments or drops.

Keep in mind, this is all just guesswork here. I'd really recommend seeing a doctor so they can figure out exactly what's happening and get you the right treatment plan.

Best regards. 😉

Thanks so much for the reply 😉
Honestly, I wasn't expecting such a 😁
now that I've been doing a little Googling about dermatitis... sometimes the skin around my mouth gets red and flaky too, mostly on one side. I just figured it was from the weather changes since it isn't anything major... 😲
And I do deal with oily dandruff, especially behind my ears, but again, nothing too crazy.
Could the flaking get worse? And the part about losing eyelashes is definitely making me a little nervous.

Just use your hands—grab yourself a soft, damp cloth, soak it in some clean warm water, and wring it out well. Hold it over your eyes for about five minutes. It’ll help clear out any crustiness and just refresh your skin. Good luck!
