No one gave me a heads-up, so I was completely caught off guard when my instructor, Kazeka Muniz, promoted me to BJJ black belt and awarded me the title of Professor! It’s easily one of the happiest days of my life, though I know full well this isn't the finish line—just another reason to keep showing up and refining the craft...

Getting a black belt in BJJ is a brutal climb—anyone wearing one has clearly put in some serious blood, sweat, and tears to earn it.

There aren't any official championships yet—mostly because the federation just started getting its act together (though honestly, even that’s debatable since there aren't many clubs actually signed up with them). Aside from pure BJJ, though, they hold the SUBOS grappling open every year. That's where you see the biggest turnout of fighters and clubs, so everyone basically treats that as the de facto championship.
