Steering wheel issues - control problems

Please don't roast me here... I finally bit the bullet and bought my first steering wheel, and decided the best way to break it in was by firing up Need for Speed: Carbon while I wait for something better to play.

I got the game running and messed around with the nitro settings and all that, but I've hit a wall because I can't figure out how to actually steer with the wheel! Every single button responds perfectly fine within the game, yet somehow the actual steering input just won't register in the settings...

Could someone please point me in the right direction? I'd really appreciate it!

Well, problem solved!
It turns out the issue was specifically with NFS Carbon, since I tested the steering wheel on other games and everything worked just fine...
