About a week ago, I picked up a sore throat—most of that's cleared up now, but the cough just won't quit. It’s making sleep nearly impossible because the second I lie down, my chest starts rattling, which just triggers more coughing. To make matters worse, it's a constant dry cough—I can't seem to clear out any of that phlegm or whatever you call it. I've read that drinking plenty of warm liquids helps, so I’ve been doing that, but nothing is actually coming up. This has been dragging on for over a week now... anyone got any advice?

It might just be a persistent dry cough that’s lost its connection to that sore throat you recently fought off. There are some reliable over-the-counter options out there to help manage the irritation, like Robitussin or sometimes even a standard sleep aid, which can really help take the edge off so you can actually get through the night. That being said, if this keeps lingering, it would definitely be a smart move to schedule some diagnostic tests to see what's actually going on.

To start things off, try this: squeeze out a lemon, mix in 2-3 teaspoons of honey—make sure it’s the real stuff from a local farmer's market, not that processed syrup you find at the grocery store—and add 15 drops of propolis. Stir it all up and take it one spoonful at a time using a plastic spoon... do this twice a day.
If you don't have any propolis on hand but you do have honey and lemon, just go without the propolis until you can pick some up.

It’s actually keeping me up at night because as soon as I lie down, my chest starts rattling and triggers this coughing fit... and to make matters worse, it’s a totally dry cough, so I can't seem to clear out any of that mucus or whatever you call it. I've been reading that I need to chug tons of warm liquids which I am definitely doing, but nothing is coming up. This has been going on for over a week now, anyone got any advice?

If it feels like there’s a ton of congestion stuck in your lungs, please don't take those suppressants like Robitussin or anything meant to just stop the cough, because you really want to go with something like Mucinex instead. That stuff actually helps break down the phlegm in your chest so you can finally hack it up and get some relief... plus, just keep drinking plenty of fluids.

And seriously, don't take it right before you hit the sack... 🙂

The ultimate old-school remedy for coughs and chest congestion👍!

You take some thinly sliced pieces of high-quality smoked bacon, layer them right over your chest, cover them with some gauze, and then wrap the whole thing up with plastic wrap. To make sure nothing slides around, you can secure it all with a towel or a wrap so it stays put overnight. By morning, you’ll basically have some warm, cooked bacon sitting there😁—but honestly, it works wonders! It’s like it somehow draws the congestion out. I’ve tried this on myself and my kids, and anyone else I’ve shared it with has seen their cough and chest pain settle down significantly. You can repeat the process whenever needed, even a few times a day, though carrying it around under your clothes can be a bit awkward. People might think it sounds a little crazy, but once you try it, you'll see what I mean..

rustypanther39 (local) has shared a recipe that quite a few people I know have tried out, and while it truly does work wonders for many, unfortunately, it didn't seem to do much for my little one.
A more budget-friendly way to get the exact same results is to simply whip up a version using standard pork lard.
