Bowel obstruction / Ileus: What to expect?

I’m looking for insights from anyone who has dealt with intestinal volvulus—specifically regarding diet and long-term management.

My son has already undergone three surgeries on his small intestine due to adhesions causing an adhesive ileus. If you've navigated similar complications, I'd appreciate your input.

Does a bowel obstruction hit out of nowhere right before the symptoms get bad, or is this something that builds up over months or even years?

Anyone actually know the answer to this?

It’s usually sudden.
Some causes include inflammation, metabolic issues—think things like myxedema, diabetic comas, electrolyte imbalances—as well as post-surgical complications, tumors, and so on.

Is that pain actually a hallmark symptom? Could it show up without any pain at all alongside other signs?

I can probably guess the answer will be a hard no, but I find myself wondering if there’s any connection to what some might call "eccentric exercise"—you know, things like twisting the body into awkward positions, intense yoga sessions, or similar movements?

Is it actually possible for this to happen to someone while they’re just sitting still? 😕
