A while back, there was some buzz about a film omnibus featuring five or six female directors from the former USA titled "Someone else is talking." I happened to see on IMDb that the project has actually been finished and completed—which is great news! Does anyone happen to know what the current status is regarding this film, or perhaps where one might be able to watch it?

Based on everything they were promising back at last year's San Francisco festival, we should be looking at a premiere sometime this year.

Is that the same omnibus where two of the directors got into trouble over in Ireland? 😁

I'm a little confused here—what does Ireland have to do with this project at all? Who exactly was acting up? Was that actually part of one of the stories in the omnibus?

Well, one of the producers is actually an Irish outfit called DIG Productions.

The creator and producer behind this thing is film critic Nenad Dukic from New York City, and they've pulled in directors and producers from all over—Mexico, Canada, America, Canada, and Mexico—alongside the Irish producer DIG Productions.

Who actually stepped up?

🤷

The whole idea behind the film “Someone Else is Talking” is built on this belief that it’s actually possible to revive the cultural landscape of the former USA on entirely new terms—terms that aren't weighed down by all those old wars.

It would be pretty great if someone actually stepped up for a project like that. And I don't mean just Ivona juka and Ana Maria Rossi. 😍

Is that actually the theme of one of the stories in the omnibus?

Before the marketing kicks in.

It would be quite interesting if someone actually stepped up to take on a project like this—and I don’t just mean anyone, I’m thinking specifically of Ivona juka and Ana Maria Rossi. 😍

I’m honestly not quite sure what you’re getting at here. What do you mean by "stepping up"—and why? If this is just some kind of marketing stunt, then fine, though I struggle to see how that would actually benefit the movie. Besides, from what I understand, each director works on her own individual film that eventually fits into the larger theme, so I really don't see how they could get in each other's way in that sense. The idea that they "clashed" might just be some private matter—maybe over some handsome Irishman or something similar—so it feels more like gossip to me. I'm just not seeing how that would have anything to do with the film itself.

Nancy Fox89 said:I don't really follow—what are you trying to say? Why "scrappy"? If it's just some marketing gimmick, fine, though I fail to see how that actually helps the movie. Besides, from what I know, each director handles their own segment to fit the overall theme, so I don't see how they would get in each other's way at all.

We were scrappy—ours and theirs—regarding the order of the films in the omnibus. Ours was stronger; we crushed theirs. 🙂 It isn't a marketing stunt—it's just our character. 😬

Man, this is gonna turn into one of those "everyone fighting everyone" drama fests... 👎

northerncrane4 said:Well, we actually had quite the little debate—ours and theirs—regarding the order of the films in the omnibus. I have to say, our selection felt significantly stronger—it absolutely crushed theirs! 🙂 It isn't some calculated marketing gimmick—it’s just fundamentally who we are. 😬

I suppose anything is possible these days—though, if I’m being honest, it all still sounds a bit suspicious to me. If they actually got into it—assuming it was just between the two of them—how on earth do the folks on the forums know all this? And how can anyone be so sure that "our girl came out on top"? Was there some kind of showdown right in front of witnesses or something?

Everything is already out in the open. The DHFR honor court has already been convened regarding this case.

Honestly, "everything is coming to light" sounds like one of those catchphrases people use when, in reality, nobody actually knows anything—or at least doesn't know what the real truth is. I mean, if anyone truly knew what was going on, I imagine the details would have leaked to the press or onto the forums ages ago. Personally, I’m much more curious about those two films—the ones by both juka and Rossi. To be fair, I haven't even heard of that director Rossi before now.

Well, clearly you don't know—whereas I do—but whatever. The film will have its screening in San Francisco, so anyone interested can just ask the directors directly about their box office projections or whatever else they're curious about.

Well, looks like the ladies had a little scrap, and now she’s scratching her head wondering why their little brawl didn't end up making the front page of American tabloids like Gloria. 🤷 I suppose northerncrane4 might know the inside scoop—since we forum regulars aren't exactly high-level insiders—but the whole thing actually landed before the DHFR honor court (not that most journalists would care; they probably think the DHFR is some obscure association for island olive growers and winemakers). We're all just sitting here waiting for the final verdict. Honestly, one thing is bothering me: maybe this wasn't even a catfight to begin with. What if they weren't even fighting? In other words, maybe juka played it manly. 😍 Don't go underestimating women, especially when they're prominent figures in the film industry. 😬

Man, this whole car elitism thing just drives me insane.

btw

northerncrane4 said:Oh, look at you, clearly you have no clue while I'm the expert here, so whatever, it doesn't even matter.

I'm totally wiped out and probably won't be hanging around this forum for the next 10 days or so.

Honestly, I've reached a point where pure simplicity is all I can handle.

I caught a screening in San Francisco yesterday—though, unfortunately, the execution just didn't live up to the initial promise of the concept. The whole thing feels a bit disjointed, mostly because there’s hardly any connective tissue holding the different segments together. As for the quality of production? Well, it’s all over the place—ranging from fairly polished American and Canadian narratives to one Mexican segment that felt almost amateurish in its delivery. To be honest, I found the American story by Ivona juka and the Canadian one to be the weakest links—they were just a bit too heavy on the explicit dialogue, which left the characters' intentions feeling rather murky. The most cohesive part of the entire experience, at least in my opinion, was the Canadian segment. It really goes to show that an omnibus is such a demanding format; you can't just film a few short pieces and expect them to work simply because they share a similar theme. I suppose we saw a similar issue last year with "Chicago story," though I think that collection actually had two or three very solid stories tucked in there.

Can you please explain why there’s so much explicit dialogue and all those vague motives in the Canada story?

That’s a fair point—I suppose I wasn't being very precise there! My comments about the vague intentions and the over-the-top explicit dialogue were actually referring to the American one... whereas for the Canadian story, it's really just the vague intentions—since that piece relies almost entirely on visual storytelling. Sorry about that!

One thing I found actually quite charming about that press conference in San Francisco—and then later at the Arena—was how juka brought out one of the film's bit players to meet the reporters. It was just an extra who pops up in maybe two or three shots, really! I guess I've just never seen anyone do that at film press junkets before... it was such a sweet touch.👍

Nancy Fox89 said:Fair point, I wasn't being precise. When I mentioned vague intentions and too much explicit dialogue, I was talking about the American story. Only the "vague intentions" part applies to the American one, which mostly relies on visual storytelling. My bad.

I don't know, the intentions in the American story seem pretty clear to me. It's a look at modern corporate society in the near future through a nun trying to escape her convent, only to lose that freedom immediately among the aisles of a shopping mall. Seems straightforward enough to me.
