Everything I've eaten all day has had this bizarre odor. First, it was some deli meat I thought had been sitting in the fridge for a while, and it smelled like a chemical cocktail of additives. Then, my standard pea and carrot stew smelled like someone had dropped a rotten egg right into the pot. I could barely finish a single bowl. I’m starving, but everything just smells... off. I have no idea what's going on. I even asked my roommate if she noticed anything weird with the deli meat, and she said it smelled fine to her. 🤷
The only thing that doesn't smell strange is these store-bought wafer cookies. It’s awful.
I've heard that smoking cigarettes or having a common cold can alter your sense of taste, but could it really be intense enough to make everything smell this bad 😲???

Honestly, this just immediately makes me think of those early stages of pregnancy

Besides all that, ☕ could there be anything else?
I’ve dealt with this nauseating smell of meat before when I wasn't even pregnant. Plus, my family was swapping out the kitchen gear lately, leaving groceries sitting out, and my aunt sometimes messes up a recipe so badly it tastes revolting—but since she barely eats, I can't really tell if it's her cooking or not. Right now, the entire living room reeks of something spoiled. It's gross.
I'll have to make sure my husband goes grab some food as soon as he gets back.
Can a weird sense of smell also be psychological in nature?

It could just be some mild seizures.

Potential causes for loss of smell:
- Acute viral, bacterial, or allergic inflammation of the upper respiratory tract (think rhinitis or sinus infections)
- Structural issues within the nasal cavity, such as a deviated septum, polyps, or tumors
- Exposure to toxic substances, drugs, or certain medications via inhalation
- Radiation exposure, whether incidental or part of medical treatment
- Issues involving mucus secretion levels
- Nerve damage affecting the olfactory system
- Endocrine imbalances
- Psychophysiological factors

So, take your pick... 😁
In my opinion, you’re likely dealing with either a mild viral infection or something psychophysiological in nature.
I just hope it isn't caused by that stale air in the restroom you seem to enjoy so much... 😂

I’m being dead serious here. It’s one of those telltale signs. You start picking up these bizarre smells that nobody else can detect—scents that just pop out of nowhere and then keep coming back to haunt you.

But look, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a disaster.

I’d say you’re looking at either a mild viral infection or perhaps something psychophysiological.
Hopefully, it isn't just the stale air from that bathroom you enjoy so much... 😂

1— I don't have any inflammation right now; my breathing is perfectly clear through my nose.
2— No issues there; airflow feels completely normal. 😁
3— I've only taken Aspirin lately—just three tablets, one a day because of a headache.
4— Unlikely... incidental? 😕
5— No mucus issues at all, aside from a little buildup in the morning.
6— What does that entail?
7— Hmm?? 😕
8— Doubtful; I don't have any diagnosed conditions, at least nothing known.🤷
placidjackal36 said:It's quite serious. It can be a symptom. Those phantom smells that nobody else detects, which suddenly appear and then recur.

But it doesn't have to be.

But if it were, wouldn't I have other symptoms? Besides, the smells aren't even that strange since I know exactly where they're coming from—my food!
Or maybe it's just a bad run of luck and everything I've eaten lately was poorly prepared.😢

If they aren't showing up on their own, then it’s just not happening. 🙂

Honestly, I’ve been dealing with this for years.

I'm pretty sure it's all down to hormones; during my PMS, I turn into a total Doberman.

I can sniff out trouble—and even scents—from dozens or hundreds of yards away.😂
During pregnancy, I wouldn't even talk about it. Plus, there's that food aversion thing, where you don't just hate the meal itself, but the mere thought of it beforehand.
Though, you definitely have some other symptoms to deal with too. 😉

There’s this thing called a pregnancy test, and honestly, most pharmacies have them just sitting there on the shelf...

During pregnancy, it’s even more intense. There's also that food aversion; it's not just about the eating itself, but the anticipation of it.

Could it really be the hormones?
I get those moments too where everything smells terrible, or the scent is just way too strong. It isn't just food, either. It's everything. Like, I'll just be sniffing around and asking, "Does this smell weird to you?" Yeah. It's gross.

I am not pregnant!
😠
By the way, I just asked my roommate, and she agrees—it definitely stinks.
😍 So it’s clearly not some medical issue on my end.
Yesterday was clearly a bad day for my appetite... and today looks to be more of the same.
😢
But fine, go ahead and 😁 lock the thread if you have to.
My sense of smell is working perfectly fine!
