My Sister's Keeper (2009)

The film adaptation of the novel by Jodi Picoult looks like such a gripping watch to me. I'm really hoping to catch it in theaters once it finally hits the big screen here in the States.🙂

I just finished the book and loved it—really moving stuff. I heard they might lean into that heavy ending for the movie, but I'm watching regardless.

Anna is adorable and looks exactly how I pictured her. The rest of the cast seems solid too, though I really wish Cameron Diaz had gone with black hair for this role; that would’ve been perfect. Kate scares me a little in the photos, but maybe I'm just overthinking it.

The trailer looked great.

It’s a decent enough movie, though I found it somewhat mediocre overall.

While Sofia Vassilieva delivers an excellent performance, Abigail Breslin feels pretty much like she always does—standard.

The decision to cast Joan Cusack as the judge was actually quite an interesting choice.

This is a serious role for Cameron Diaz, yet her performance remains fairly routine.

Alec Baldwin, however, is very impressive in his role as the attorney.

There is also a brief cameo by Emily Deschanel (of Bones fame) playing a doctor.

Honestly, I think the movie looks pretty solid and I'm dying to actually sit down and watch it. I already have the file, but I can't find the subtitles anywhere to save my life, so if anyone knows where to hunt them down, please let me know!!! 🙂

Such a heartbreaking movie. It’s incredible how a family illness can completely tear relationships apart while simultaneously pulling everyone closer together...
Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) is as solid as ever in her role, and I was honestly blown away by Cameron Diaz—she played that complex, morally gray mother figure so beautifully.

Watched it the other night and I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed. Great cast, solid book to start with, and they still managed to mess it all up. I get that a movie can't follow a book word for word, but there’s just so much missing here... The book is structured so that you see everything through each character's eyes by chapter—including the lawyer and even the social worker, who was completely cut from the film. In the movie, it's all just reduced to the illness, and once again, it centers entirely on the sick sister, which the book skillfully avoided by showing all sides. SPOILER Not to mention how they changed the ending, because I guess for Americans everything just needs to be a "happy end" (though if you actually read the book, you'll know why I see this movie version as a happy end)END SPOILER

Maybe you would have actually been a decent person if you hadn't spent all that time reading that book🤷

I haven't actually read the book. The Film was alright, though. Sad, I guess. But whatever.

I honestly haven't stopped tearing up since I finished watching that Film =) Everything about it was just incredible—even Cameron gave a surprisingly solid performance! Now, I’m settling in to read the book; I have this weird habit of watching the adaptation first, just so I can do the exact opposite next time... otherwise, I’d probably just end up disappointed by the movie.

I absolutely loved the Film, and now I’m dying to dive into the book—does anyone know where I can pick it up? I read in English, so finding an English edition shouldn't be an issue. Is it available on Algorithm?

I didn't like the Film, and I haven't even touched the book. 😁 The core concept was genuinely brilliant, but they executed the story in such a lackluster, hollow way when they could have leaned into the emotion much more effectively. It just felt wasted...

I've already read the book, and it is absolutely perfect. I didn't go to the theater to see the Film because there was a risk of flooding at the local cinema 😁 so I'll just download it and watch it at home.

Anna decides to go to court to get medical emancipation—basically, she wants the right to make her own medical decisions. I'm not going to spoil why she chooses to do that or what happens next, so just watch the Film.

I read the book a long time ago and honestly, I cried like a baby when I finished 🙂
. I've been avoiding the Film because I heard they changed the ending from the book, which usually bugs me... but people seem to be praising it, so maybe I'll give it a shot.

I am curious about how things wrap up in the book, as I have already watched the Film. Would anyone be willing to send me a spoiler via private message? 🙂

Honestly? I feel like the only people who could actually hype this movie up are the ones who haven't even touched the book. I’m sitting here today just totally kicking myself for watching it. It wasn't even just the little technical glitches or whatever... it was the actual story. Like, how they butchered it! The way they changed everything... it was just wrong. Even Colleen Hoover was reportedly against all those changes—I think there was some legal stuff involving the courtroom drama, too—but she was basically powerless because, well, she sold the rights and clearly didn't include a clause that would let her have a say in the screenplay.

The characters? Totally one-dimensional. And the acting... ugh, it was just painful to watch. There are tons of actors in this flick that I usually adore, but man, this one is definitely going to be a dark spot on their resumes. And don't even get me started on the ending. It’s so bad it’s almost impressive, especially if you know the book (don't get me wrong, I'm not being harsh for no reason!). In the book, the ending hits so much deeper. It isn't some cliché Hollywood trope; it feels real, you know?

If you haven't read the book yet, please, do yourself a favor and go grab it. Seriously. You won't regret it.
As for the movie? Just don't. Save your time.
