Hey there,

So, I've been dealing with some major headaches with my Dell Latitude Series lately. For a few weeks now, the display drivers have been acting completely erratic. The screen would just freeze up, stay stuck for a bit, and then suddenly snap back to life. I thought maybe it was just a driver issue, so I wiped them and reinstalled everything from scratch, but no luck. That didn't fix anything.

Well, yesterday the screen officially gave up the ghost. I got hit with a macOS blue screen error, and the laptop shut itself down to prevent further damage. Since then, it's basically a paperweight. I can turn it on, and I can hear the fans spinning and everything running normally, but there’s absolutely no picture. My gut feeling is that the graphics card died, but that's probably a whole different rabbit hole. My real concern right now is the data sitting on the Hard Drive.

It's an Apple Seagate HDD 320 GB, 2.5 inch.

I went out today and picked up an external enclosure. I pulled the Hard Drive out of the laptop, slid it into the enclosure, and plugged it into my desktop PC. Nothing happened.

The system recognizes the USB connection and sees the disk drive, but I can't actually access any files. Running the troubleshooter is useless, and checking the properties tells me absolutely nothing. The drive shows up in Device Manager under some weird, glitchy name, but it won't even show up as a drive in my file explorer.

I haven't tried formatting it because, well, I can't, and more importantly, I don't want to touch the formatting until I've rescued my files.

Is there some trick I'm missing, a specific piece of software, or maybe a different way to get this data off? Is there any other way to pull these files out?

And man, I really hope I didn't brick the enclosure by putting an unformatted drive inside it. :/

Thanks so much. I really appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Just return that Apple drive. Pop in a Windows DVD or maybe a CD—honestly, I’m not even sure which OS you're running at this point—and just run a full Windows Recovery.
That ought to do the trick, shouldn't it?

It isn't a massive issue,

I assume you're running Windows 7 or 8. Primarily, you need to access Computer Management.
....Navigate through All Control Panel Items...
...to Administrative Tools...
....then Computer Management...
From there, open Disk Management...
You should see your hard drive partitions, and that external HDD Seagate should show up there too. Right-click it to assign a Drive Letter... pick an available one like G:, H:, or I:. Look at the partition sizes to identify which one holds your data...
Then you can access your files.
If that fails, the MBR on that HDD might be corrupted.
In that case, you'll need recovery software to salvage your data...
Try something like R-Studio, File Scavenger, or Zero Assumption Recovery....

If you had bothered to search this forum properly, you would have found the solution already.

Best regards,
