Doxycycline usage/side effects?

There’s already a thread about this one. I took it for a suspected inflammation, though it turns out there wasn't any issue at all. Overall, I handled it quite well without any side effects. Just make sure you take it on a full stomach, and don't lie down for at least an hour or two after taking it, otherwise, the heartburn will really burn your esophagus.

Is it even worth asking something like this?
The right side of my mouth is incredibly swollen. I already deal with periodontitis and head to the dentist every single month for deep cleanings, but I have never experienced anything quite this severe before...
I’m torn on whether I should start on antibiotics. How common is it for things to escalate to this level?

I guess I’m handling it okay, but things are already starting to get a bit messy down there... I've only been on this for 15 days, and apparently, I'm supposed to go for four months... so, yeah, it's kind of weighing on me.🤷

I just stepped out of the pharmacy, and honestly, I’m at my breaking point with this gum pain...
My dentist hasn't been able to see me yet, but I couldn't just sit here and suffer through it.
The pharmacist looked over these three options—doxycycline, lansoprazole, and Almacin—and gave me her take:
She warned me that doxycycline is far too harsh, and that lansoprazole isn't really what I need right now; she thinks Almacin is the only tolerable choice among them.
I’m planning to head to a periodontist specialist later today to get a real professional opinion and figure out what's actually going on.
To be honest, I feel like I've come down with a massive cold, and I suspect this gum swelling is just my body reacting to being run down.

So, I just started a two-week round of antibiotics to clear up some urological bacteria issues.
Is it actually okay to drink coffee or have a glass of red wine after lunch while I'm on this stuff?
The dosage is one 100 mg pill at noon and another at midnight, so theoretically, there's a huge gap between doses—can I sneak in some caffeine or wine during that window?
Also, what has your experience been like with this specific antibiotic? Any weird side effects I should look out for?
Thanks

If you're taking this after a pill, drink your coffee black.
Dairy products—including milk—will weaken the effectiveness, as will antacids (like Gastrol), alcohol, or iron supplements. Take it with a full meal because it’s tough on the stomach.
If you have to take any of those things, wait at least two hours after the antibiotic. That said, since this is only a two-week course, you can probably just power through it. 😉

Yeah, he’s the only one.
By the way, have you heard anything about what’s going on with the food situation?
People keep saying this medication makes them feel weak and totally kills their appetite,
but honestly? I feel like it just made my hunger even more intense...

It’s quite harsh on the stomach and can cause nausea, which is why you should always take it with a full meal. Make sure you drink plenty of water as well to prevent the capsule from getting stuck in your esophagus. Don't lie down immediately after taking it—do it for the sake of your esophagus.

That antibiotic can be pretty brutal on your stomach—I’d suggest grabbing a bite to eat before you take it, rather than taking it on an empty stomach. And for heaven's sake, don't go straight to lying down right after you swallow it 😁.
By the way, there's a much larger thread dedicated specifically to doxycycline over on the forums; it covers a lot more ground regarding personal experiences and how it actually impacts women's health 😉

Alright, so I’ve got about two days left on this round of meds,
and honestly, everything's going fine—no major drama on my end so far...
I've been taking them before breakfast and dinner, and it's been smooth sailing.
Now, whether that bacterial infection is actually cleared out? That's anyone's guess until the lab results come back.
I definitely feel better, but is it a total 180? Not quite yet....

Look, people are building up way too much hype around doxycycline. You just need to keep a few practical things in mind and you'll be fine. The first time I took it, I felt nauseous; the second time, I felt nothing. 🤷 I was just as careful and mindful of everything both times, so 🤷

Etoga, the inflammation finally cleared up and honestly? I feel like a brand-new person.
The only real downside during those two weeks was feeling pretty wiped out,
plus some nagging headaches here and there,
but man, it was worth it. I guess even those damn antibiotics serve a purpose after all. :-)

Well, thank God you're doing alright. I took that stuff ages ago to clear up some acne, but it absolutely wrecked my stomach—I ended up needing an endoscopy. To make matters worse, it stained my teeth; they developed these brown spots and speckles that looked just like moles. Honestly, when I walked into the dentist's office, I thought I had a graveyard in my mouth. She took one look and told me it wasn't cavities, then immediately asked which antibiotic I’d been on. It was clearly a tetracycline. Now, my medical records explicitly state I am never to touch it again.

I thought I should start a new thread here. I’m currently on a 12-day course of antibiotics—one capsule twice a day—to treat some Ureaplasma. Today marks day six. Around the third day, my throat started feeling sore, my sinuses began running, and my ears felt a bit congested. I suppose I'm wondering if this could be related to stomach acid issues caused by the medication.🤷I haven't developed any hives or anything similar, but I am experiencing quite a bit of burping and have completely lost my appetite. Since everyone else at home is also under the weather, I can't really tell if the sore throat is just a common cold or something else...
Should this be a reason to stop taking the antibiotics? It isn't unbearable for me right now, but I am somewhat worried about potentially damaging my stomach lining.

What kind of results should I expect from these pills when treating acne? My dermatologist prescribed them for me; I'm taking two every 12 hours for the first week, then dropping down to one a day for the following three weeks. I've been on them for six days now and, thank God, I haven't had any side effects so far. Just to clarify, I'm male. I'm really hoping this helps clear up the terrible acne on my back and neck. Tomorrow will be my last day taking two a day before switching to just one for the next three weeks. It's the 100 mg dose. I work out a lot and stay constantly active, so maybe that's why I'm not feeling any side effects—I'm not overweight or anything. Or maybe it's because I consume quite a bit of dairy, especially milk and probiotic yogurts. The pharmacist did mention that I probably shouldn't drink much milk while on this treatment, but I might take that risk since I'm such a milk addict 🙂
By the way, please only reply if you have actual experience using these tablets specifically for ACNE. If you're dealing with fungal infections in the vagina, on the penis, or whatever else, there's no need to respond—I am strictly interested in acne
.
Speaking of those vaginal infections and other issues—something feels off here. About 90% of the posts I've read over these ten pages are about women's health issues involving bacterial infections that have nothing to do with ACNE. I'm just hoping my dermatologist knows what she's doing, because it seems a bit strange to me—how is an antibiotic that isn't primarily intended for acne supposed to help a man get rid of them? It doesn't seem to make sense...
Thanks.

By the way, can we please keep the replies limited to people who have actually used these pills for ACNE? Like, if you're dealing with vaginal yeast infections, penile issues, or whatever else, skip this thread—I am strictly interested in the acne side of things.
Actually, speaking of those vaginal infections and all that—something feels off here. Like, 90% of the posts I've scrolled through over the last ten pages are about women's health issues involving bacterial infections that have nothing to do with ACNE. I really hope my dermatologist knows her stuff because it seems weird to me—how is an antibiotic meant for other things going to help a guy get rid of acne? It doesn't quite click for me...
Thanks.
I actually stumbled onto this thread totally by accident. Long story short, my girlfriend and I have been taking this antibiotic for a week now. We're taking it because she deals with constant yeast infections and HPV—we've been stuck in that annoying cycle for months.
Then I just realized this same antibiotic works for acne, and since I've struggled with skin issues for years, my face suddenly looks as smooth as a baby's butt! 🙂 I was wondering why my skin had SUDDENLY improved so much lately :P
And then I read this 😁
As for side effects, thank God I haven't had any yet.
For context, I also took Accutane about five years ago for acne, and things have been better since then. I mean, I still get breakouts, but nothing like before. I'm 23 now, so they're probably starting to clear up on their own anyway.
Anyway, that's my two cents. 😉

Absolute nightmare of a medication. I took it for acne, but it ended up leaving these permanent stains on my teeth—I honestly thought my whole smile was ruined. They won't budge, almost like birthmarks. On top of that, I developed gastritis. This stuff is brutal.

It’s interesting how, from what I’ve gathered, women seem to suffer more from side effects, whereas it doesn't feel as common for men. Also, that dental symptom you mentioned is actually listed under possible side effects. I really hope I don't run into anything like that, because if I notice any issues, I'm done—I'll just toss the whole thing in the trash.
@hiddenwolf12/">@@hiddenwolf12...I was on Accutane about five years ago too. It worked wonders for my acne, but man, it's such a harsh drug. It dries out your skin completely, and who knows what kind of other side effects it might be causing deep down inside.
