Five weeks ago, I got hit by a car while crossing at a crosswalk. It was a pedestrian accident, and I ended up with a knee injury and a calf contusion. The impact was on the outer side, just behind the knee—hard to describe, really. No broken bones or torn ligaments, just heavy bruising and hematomas. My orthopedic surgeon told me to ice it, rest up, and expect at least a month of recovery. He said I could walk, but I had to take it easy. The swelling was brutal; I couldn't even put weight on that leg for the first week. After two weeks, the swelling went down enough that I could limp around, though I couldn't tense my calf muscle at all. Now, the swelling is gone and I’m walking normally, but if I overdo it during the day, it aches once I finally sit down and relax. Sometimes I'll bend it too far without thinking. The real issue is squatting or getting up from a crouch; it hurts, and it feels like something is catching or clicking inside the knee. 😕

I have a follow-up appointment in a week, so I'll get the full story then, but has anyone here dealt with something similar? How long did your recovery actually take? Or are there any doctors on this forum? 😁 I've been trying to stick to my daily workout routine and lots of walking, but since I can't right now, I'm dying to know when I can get back to it.

I know it’s probably pointless to ask here since my check-up is so soon, but I just need to know!

Also, right after the crash, I had massive hematomas right where the car hit me. It was hard to the touch and completely black and blue. A few weeks later, those started fading, but then new bruises popped up on my shin, the outer part of my calf, and down near my ankle. They're mostly gone now, but why does that happen?

It’s highly probable that you've suffered a meniscus tear, which would explain why the joint is catching like that.

Oh, really? 😕 The orthopedic surgeon didn't see any ligament damage... sure, it was pretty swollen back then, but he checked everything thoroughly.

Great. Am I headed for surgery too?
