Oi!

I’m curious to get your take on this genre. Do you guys actually listen to it, and which bands do you think are worth a shot?

Basically, the Oi! movement is where skinhead culture and punk collide.
The first wave brought us names like Cock Sparrer, Cockney Rejects, Black Flag, and Sham 69...
Then you have the second wave—bands like The Business, The Last Resort, The 4-Skins, Combat 84, Condemned 84, Infa-Riot, The Blood, The Oppressed, and Anti-Heroes...
And so on...
There aren't many local American bands doing this properly, though you can stumble upon a few if you look hard enough...

Personally, I spin quite a bit of this stuff. I even managed to catch a few live shows back in the day, seeing acts like Cockney Rejects, PTTTB, and Lost Fastidios...

One thing, though—please don't try to conflate certain (quasi) nationalist movements with the music itself. They might share some superficial ties, but they aren't the same thing...

I'm not really into much Oi! myself, but I can get behind a band like Non Servium. 😍

I haven't really crossed paths with Non Servium yet. From what I gather, they lean more toward that hardcore sound, and honestly, Landser was never really my cup of tea...
Lately, I've been spending most of my time spinning Close Combat, Wretched Ones, Argy Bargy, Booted Cocks, Funeral Dress, and Lower Class Brats...
If you haven't given any of those bands a spin, do yourself a favor and check them out. They're absolutely killer...

I don't really listen to much from that specific movement, though I feel like I know quite a bit about it... It honestly irritates me a little when people bring up the skinhead aspect, since they were never really my crowd, so it feels kind of strange to me how they ended up getting tangled up in the punk scene in the first place... It was a great move for them to unite the working-class youth and the whole crew, but there just seemed to be way too many stylistic details involved in everything... I've always been more drawn to street punk—which, if you think about it, used to be called Oi!—but street punk eventually branched out from Oi! as its punk alternative, just without all those skinhead elements... plus, the music itself is just much harder... 🙂

Non Servium is a powerhouse band....🙂

Oh, please, you're really going to sit there and claim there aren't skinheads in street punk? If you actually understood skinhead culture and its history, you wouldn't be throwing around terms like "skinheads" so casually. Is that how people like you operate? You see a shaved head and some Doc Martens and immediately label someone a skinhead, instantly associating them with those Nazi skinheads who salute with their right hands—you know, the actual racists and fascists. It’s nothing but pure prejudice.

But looking at the big picture, I think Oi! music is absolutely killer; it's pretty much all I listen to. And if you ask me, the European scene totally dominates this stuff—especially the bands coming out of Spain, Italy, and the UK. As for here in the States, it's not like we don't have anything, it's just that we don't have a legitimate, top-tier Oi! band. It's a damn shame... Oi!

I mean, Fakofbolan is definitely a pretty hardcore Oi! band...

but when you look at the whole Oi! scene as a whole... the absolute legends have gotta be Cock Sparrer and The Exploited...

Man, you really have to dig through the literal trash to find stuff like that... but hey, even that has its crowd... respect.

Supposedly they're capping it at 500 per $27, but I wouldn't be surprised if we end up in the same mess we saw at the concerts 😁

It’s such a damn shame that GBH is playing that date over in Mexico... honestly, I think I’d much rather just head down to Di and spend my time dancing to some heavy metal gigs 😍

I mean, if you ask me, Condemned 84 are definitely among the heaviest hitters out there, I guess.
