Found some mystery beads in a shoebox

I’ve been wondering for ages—what is actually the point of those little silica gel packets (or sometimes those little tablets) you find tucked inside a box when you buy a new pair of shoes? 😁🤷

I don't know, personally I think it goes great with some slow-roasted pork. Plus, you get a really satisfying little burp afterward 😉

Someone told me ages ago that this was meant to keep moisture out😕 I’ve got no clue how much of that was actually true🤷 but I just took their word for it😁

Exactly, those silica packets are there to soak up all that moisture...
Otherwise, you’d end up with shoes that are completely flattened, much like my own pair after a long day... 😁

I always figured they were scented..........

Honestly, my favorite part about those little bead packets is the "DO NOT EAT" warning printed on them. It’s such a joke—as if I’d ever mistake those things for a snack or try to munch on something I just found at the bottom of my shoe. Seriously, who are they trying to protect? 😬

Think about it: a single silica gel bead actually has a surface area spanning several square meters because it’s so incredibly porous. It's basically all holes. Whatever you do, don't go eating them—they aren't food-grade. While pure SiO2 isn't going to mess with your digestion, this stuff isn't just pure SiO2. It can be laced with cobalt.

I heard those were just portable compressed grain bags (PCGB)

As for dealing with moisture... I actually kind of enjoy wetting my hand and then shaking those little beads into my palm, just watching them soak up all the liquid 😬

Yeah... I went ahead and tested it out myself, and it definitely soaked up the liquid.😁

I honestly thought they were either fighting off mold or trying to get rid of moths...
