Looking for a good, affordable editor!

So, I’m at the point where I need to send my master's thesis off for professional proofreading—you know, that final polish before the professors get their hands on it. I’ve been doing some preliminary research into what various editing agencies and freelance services charge, and honestly, the quotes I've seen have left me feeling a little lightheaded 😲. It’s a bit overwhelming—I don't personally know anyone in the industry, and I'm completely flying blind when it comes to the standard market rates for this kind of thing... Does anyone here have any firsthand experience or perhaps a solid recommendation for someone reliable?🙂

Finding a decent editor who’s willing to work under $6.75 per page is going to be an absolute uphill battle.

Just out of curiosity, how much are those various agencies actually charging these days? I mean, if you’ve already done the digging…

Anyway, what’s your actual timeline for getting this job finished?

The cheapest option is usually $8.25 plus tax, and considering my manuscript is about 180 pages...😕. I’m hoping to have everything polished and ready within the next month. For now, I’ve mostly just been trying to get a feel for the standard market rates.

Is this content written in English, and will I be charged extra if I have to rewrite it?

There’s one woman on this forum who charges even more than I do, but she’s one of the rare professionals I’d actually trust with my own manuscript.

I actually have an excellent editor I use. I think she usually just processes payments $6.75 via credit card. She might even be open to giving you a bit of a discount if you have a large volume of work. I’m just not sure if she wants the extra hassle, though. Or if she'd even want the additional workload.

I was a literature major
so it really depends on whether you need a rigorous, academic line edit
or just a quick polish to ensure everything flows nicely and makes sense

Honestly, I don't know why you'd bother with a literature degree when your eyesight is clearly failing you.

That whole idea of making things "smooth and clear" is really just a matter of style. 🙂

To be perfectly honest—I didn't major in English or literature—but reading texts like this... can be quite painful to the eyes... 😉
