External DVD Drive

Hey, I could really use some help here,

So, I'm trying to use this LG DVD Writer, and it was totally fine at first—plugged it into my PC and it recognized it immediately. But now, a few days later, it’s just acting up and won't show up at all. It seems to be getting power from the computer, though. I'm running Windows 8.1, so I'm wondering if I accidentally messed something up? Maybe I need to reinstall a driver or something? Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Ran a quick Windows update and everything seems to be running smooth now.

Just one more thing, I was wondering if I could just put a link right on my desktop? Like, rename it so I don't have to dig through menus every single time I need to get to that specific spot...
