Hi everyone—I’m 28 years old, and just to get ahead of any immediate concerns, my blood pressure and EKG results have all come back perfectly normal. 😢 My issue is this... well, it happens occasionally—maybe once every couple of days—where I'll take a breath and it feels like something just "jolts" or knocks the wind out of me for a split second. It's quite unsettling. I can't help but wonder if it might be related to some sort of impulse disorder, perhaps? I ask because someone very close to me—they're 25, a smoker (which I am definitely not)—actually suffered a heart attack a few months ago. They experienced a similar sensation, a sort of "interruption" in their breathing during physical exertion, but for me, it happens while I'm just sitting there at rest, which seems... well, inexplicable to me, at least. I would truly appreciate it if someone could offer some advice or guidance on what my next steps should be.

So, here’s my situation—I’m 22 now, and I’ve been dealing with these similar symptoms for about four years. It was honestly such an exhausting ordeal, dragging myself from one specialist to another just to get a straight answer... I went through all sorts of different diagnoses over the years, but this latest one actually seems to make sense. For what it's worth, I don't smoke, yet I would occasionally experience these episodes where, after a particularly "heavy" breath—if you know what I mean—my breathing would suddenly spike and my heart would start racing uncontrollably. Lately, those episodes have been happening more frequently. Eventually, they figured out that I have a pinched nerve in my spine that runs toward my ribs, which turns out to be the culprit. After a few sessions with a chiropractor and some physical therapy, the symptoms actually cleared up for over six months, though they're slowly starting to creep back in now. Given that I have scoliosis, it all kind of adds up... I’d really suggest reaching out to your primary care physician first; I wasted so much time seeing cardiologists, pulmonologists, neurologists, and whatnot, only to find out it was something else entirely... I hope this helps somehow...

I honestly think it’s mostly psychological—just how our brains work. When someone close to you goes through a heart attack, it’s totally normal to start feeling those same symptoms yourself just by proxy. I went through something similar when a family member had one, and my left arm was acting up for months afterward since that was one of the main signs 🙄

Shortness of breath can definitely be a symptom of anxiety or panic attacks... I'm not sure if the person you're talking about actually survived the attack or not, but it clearly shook you up big time. It might be worth chatting with a therapist just to process everything
