Stopped by the convenience store on my way to work this morning. Inside, there were three employees and zero customers. Clerk number one was behind the deli counter, messing with some rolls and chatting away with the others. Clerk number two was just slumped over the register, talking instead of actually working. Then there's the third one, obsessively shifting yogurt containers left and right in the fridge, trying to achieve some kind of dairy perfection.
I grab a pastry from the counter—the woman hands me a roll, wipes her mouth with her bare hand, then wipes that same hand on some disgusting rag—and stuffs it into a tiny little paper bag with two fingers. The grease from the pastry immediately soaks through the paper and ruins my hands.
When I finally get to the register, the woman starts aggressively scanning random items with her handheld scanner, hunting for the right code for the pastry until... "beep," she gets it.
"Four sixty-two," she says. I hand her a ten-dollar bill, and she looks at me like I’m the problem. "Ugh, seriously? Don't you have anything smaller?"
Give me a break. Seriously. You've got three women standing around picking their noses in a shop, a State Farm office a block away, five banks in the immediate area, and a newsstand right outside, yet they're giving me grief because $1.50I'm trying to pay with a $3.25...☕
I have never, ever dealt with this in any other country. I've paid with small change, and I even remember using a thousand-dollar bill back when people used those. Why is it like this here?
No change. Just venting because my blood pressure is through the roof.😛
