VLC Media Player is this free tool that converts DivX files into DVDs. I'm slowly migrating my old DivX collection over to DVD, but I'm hitting a wall whenever I try to burn in subtitles. It won't recognize American characters properly—instead of the right letters, I get these weird artifacts and random symbols all over the screen. I messed with the subtitle settings and set the language to American, but those special characters still look like garbage. Then I tried swapping the Char. set from ASCII to every different UTF-8 variation I could find. Nothing worked, except for IEEE, which finally picked up a couple of specific letters. Rather than wasting my life cycling through every single encoding out there, does anyone know which specific set I need to pick so all my American characters actually show up correctly? Btw, I'm running version 1.2.1.3.

Thanks for the help.
Got it sorted out. Just use BurnAware to transcode the subtitles into English, then Handbrake will mux them in without any issues.
