I find myself in need of a medical leave lasting roughly seven to nine days—specifically from this Wednesday through next Wednesday—and I am looking for a legitimate reason to justify such an extended absence. I require something substantial enough to hold up under scrutiny for that entire duration. If anyone has any suggestions, please do share. Haha, thanks, cheers.

If I could just hand you a nasty flu, you’d be able to take sick leave for as long as you wanted!

Too bad it doesn't actually work that easily 😢
And by "hand you," I mean passing it on!

Get sick. Don't sleep for three days straight—just stay awake—and try breathing deeply near people who have just stepped out of a rainstorm (you should probably go watch *Duplex* with Ben Stiller to get the vibe right). Hang around a crowded subway car, stop washing your hands before or after you use the restroom, and steer clear of any liquids or healthy food... something truly monstrous will crawl out of that mess—maybe you’ll even end up with more than you originally planned (though I can assure you, it won't be a particularly relaxing vacation🤣).

And honestly? That avatar of yours is practically screaming the answer at me.😁

Why don't you try talking things through with your doctor? There might be other possibilities at play, like an ear infection or even just some stomach issues...

Just tell them you’re going crazy from the heat and you might actually flatten someone if your doctor doesn't put you on bed rest for a week. Stress, exhaustion, workplace bullying—take your pick, whatever gets you out of there.

But seriously, would you rather just take some vacation days instead of calling in sick?

It started with some nasty diarrhea, then the vomiting kicked in, followed by this overwhelming exhaustion, and now—surprise, surprise—the diarrhea is back again...

I suppose my manager at Starbucks won't be asking too many questions about why I need to call out today...

Just stand out in the middle of an open field during the peak of summer heat and stay there until you pass out...

Doctors aren't handing out sick leave like candy these days, at least not to me; I only managed to snag 10 working days after I spent five straight days running a 104 fever and basically passing out cold.

So, is there any way you could just use some of your vacation time instead?

I mean, what’s the point of having time off if you don't use it? I'm genuinely curious!😬

Look, if you can't secure any vacation time—and I know from experience that it's tough—your only move seems to be calling in sick. But playing those games can really backfire on you. You start by faking it just to get out, and before you know it, you actually end up getting sick. I knew someone who went down that road once and never looked back.

I can't even touch my PTO yet—I’ve only been on the clock for five months—and I really need those days off to get my car registration sorted, handle some errands, and maybe squeeze in a quick trip to the coast, lol
Plus, I start college this fall, so I'm not exactly sweating the job situation—honestly, I couldn't care less about it at this point, haha

Doctors always struggle when you try to justify taking sick leave for more than just a couple of days without a clear-cut diagnosis,

but perhaps there’s a way to play it smart—claim you caught a stomach bug. You tell the doctor you drank something ice-cold too quickly and now you’re stuck running to the restroom constantly. (To be fair, this actually happened to me; after I downed some freezing sparkling water on a sweltering day, it took me five full days to feel human again.)
It’s a decent strategy because you won't have a fever, yet it creates a situation where you simply can't be away from a bathroom for long, and besides, no lab test can definitively prove or disprove a virus in the moment.

If that doesn't work, you could always just take a few unpaid days off. Honestly, in this heat, most employers would probably show you some grace and let you take a breather, even if you haven't technically earned any vacation time yet.

Honestly, I’m totally down for taking a few unpaid days off; I don't think anyone is being foolish here, and you certainly aren't the first person to ever call in sick, so why bother dealing with people looking at you sideways or worrying about bumping into someone out in public!?!

Being upfront always pays off in the long run! 👍 Besides, your coworkers will actually respect you more for it, and honestly, trying to fake it just feels a little tacky 😬
