How to respond to a lost PM?

I just replied to a private message, but now the sender is blowing up my inbox claiming they never actually got a response.
Has anyone else dealt with this glitchy mess, or am I just having the worst luck today?

Hmm... maybe you typed the wrong address? You might want to try sending it again... just double-check that address first.

Or, it could possibly be an issue on the receiver's end... I don't think I've ever really run into that happening to me.

Or maybe he just had me on his ignore list all along
