Greetings. (I shall begin with decorum, as that is the level of response I expect from this community.)

Where might one go to determine if they are suffering from an attention deficit disorder or perhaps a computer addiction? To put it plainly, I find it impossible to focus on a single task. Studying has become an exercise in futility; even after turning off everything—the TV, the PC, all distractions—my mind remains a chaotic whirlwind of sixteen different thoughts at once. Without my computer, I feel practically lifeless. I simply cannot conceive of any other form of recreation. It has reached a point where I am neglecting my friends and social obligations. I have no desire to let things deteriorate further, so I am asking for your guidance...

P.S.

Would a local Mayo Clinic facility be the appropriate place to address these issues?

I’m honestly a little worried about 🙂. You know what I mean? Like, you just gotta go out and find some kind of commitment—join a local pickup basketball league or something—and find a solid group of friends to hang out with! That way they can actually pull you away from the computer screen. Seriously though, how much can a PC really matter in the grand scheme of things? Trust me on this one...

We all know how it goes..
Basically, just go ahead and smash your PC or sabotage it so badly you can't even turn it on...
Do it today, seriously.

Expect the withdrawal symptoms, too much free time, pure boredom, and all that crap... but I guess that's just part of the process..
In the meantime, you should probably start looking for stuff to actually do with your life.
- Go learn how to skateboard (find someone to teach you or look up a local skate park)
- Find a crew to skate with, maybe check out some local forums or hang out at the park.
- Join a hiking club or something; sign up and head out on the trails with them. Those groups are always looking for new people, and they usually know exactly how it feels to be the new guy who doesn't know anyone, so they're pretty welcoming. 🙂

I could probably think of a dozen other things, but that's about it for now... after a month, you'll feel like a totally different person.

The real issue is that everyone heads off to the coast for summer break, leaving me completely stranded. I end up with absolutely nothing to do in NYC, and when I finally decide to head down to the beach, I’m just stuck with my laptop because there isn't a single decent group of people around 31 miles
