I was wondering if anyone might have some insight—or perhaps knows where I could look up information—regarding this specific bacterium (influence)
What kind of illnesses does it cause, just how dangerous is it really, and what are the standard treatments?

I don't really get why you're even looking into this, considering every single baby gets immunized against it by the time they're two months old.

My cousin just received their child's medical leave certification—it simply states "illness" as the reason—and they weren't given any further details at all—just that it was an ear infection.

My ear is totally inflamed, man... honestly, it’s just some bacteria doing its thing, nothing out of the ordinary.

So, nothing to worry about then. Thanks!

It isn't quite as simple as just saying it's a bacterium... we first have to determine which serotype we are dealing with. If it only caused an ear infection, it is likely a non-encapsulated type (biotypes 2 or 3), which aren't nearly as dangerous
However, if it is an encapsulated strain—most commonly serotype 2—then the situation becomes much more serious (think meningitis, sepsis, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, or pericarditis). In those cases, children under four who were exposed to the patient should be given prophylactic rifampin...

but if it’s the encapsulated kind—most likely serotype 2—then things get heavy (we're talking meningitis, sepsis, septic arthritis, bone infections, pericarditis...) in those cases, you usually have to give kids under 4 who were exposed on prophylactic rifampin...

Doc, don't overcomplicate things here 😁 😁

Look, the guy clearly stated the kid just has an ear infection.

The influence is a super common cause of ear infections.

So why bring up sepsis and joint infections and rifampin now? 😕

I know this thread is pretty old, but I’m hoping someone might be able to weigh in here.... My 10-month-old daughter has the influence of the influenza virus, though we aren't quite sure which subtype yet, and she's been running a fever for four days now. She's sounding really hoarse and started coughing—which she wasn't doing until last night—and she's been on Cephalexin since the third day. Honestly, I'm kind of freaking out after falling down an internet rabbit hole.... My older son is starting preschool soon, so I'm just desperately hoping he brought home something relatively harmless... Does anyone happen to know what the typical symptoms look like for those nasty bugs people talk about when they mention this specific bacterium?
HELP please!!😢
